In what is turning out to be unintentional information disclosure, Samsung is set to launch its highly anticipated Galaxy S23 series on February 1. This is according to a recent announcement on the company’s Colombia website. The teaser for the event and as expected has since been removed, featured the tagline “Epic moments are coming” and showed three vertically arranged cameras with leaves and lilacs in the corner, hinting at the design and possible color options for the new phones.

WhatsApp to Introduce a Convenient Local Network Chat Transfer Feature for Android Devices

According to information we have from WATBetaInfo, WhatsApp is making it easier for users to move their chat history from one Android device to another. WABetaInfo indicates that the latest beta versions of the messaging app include a feature that allows users to scan a QR code to transfer their chats over a local network connection.

Previously, users had to rely on Google Drive to transfer their chats; however, if the latest information is to go by, the new feature simplifies the process and makes it faster. To use the feature, users simply need to go to the WhatsApp settings on their original device and tap on the option to export or transfer chats to another device. This will bring up a QR code, which can then be scanned by the new device using the WhatsApp companion mode.

The new feature is still in development, so it is not yet clear when it will be available to users. However, it is expected to be rolled out to beta testers soon, with a wider release in the stable version of the app to follow. The inclusion of this chat transfer feature is welcomed for WhatsApp users, as it will make it much easier and faster to switch to a new device without losing their chat history.

Insurance Companies Struggle to Comply with New Financial Reporting Standard, Facing Possibility of Mergers or Sales

The implementation of the International Financial Reporting Standard (IFRS-17) has come with significant costs for insurance companies, with some fearing they may be forced to merge or sell their businesses to third parties as a result. The new standard, which became effective on January 1, 2023, aims to bring uniformity to the way insurance companies prepare their financial statements, making it easier for investors and analysts to compare the financial performance of companies across different jurisdictions. However, the transition to IFRS-17 has been challenging for some companies, particularly due to the shortage of actuaries and the high cost of actuarial and accounting software.

David Limo, head of the IFRS 17 Working Party at The Actuarial Society of Kenya, has noted that small insurers are struggling to retain or hire actuaries due to higher costs, while multinationals have also faced the exit of their employees. The standard requires insurance companies to have a large amount of data on their insurance policies, which some companies may not have kept in their records.

Sammy Muthui, CEO of Minet Kenya Insurance Brokers, has said that some insurance companies in Kenya may be fatigued by the introduction of new requirements and the cost of compliance involved. Muthui explained that fatigue began with the introduction of risk-based capital in 2014, which required insurers to increase their capital to a certain amount. The implementation of IFRS-17 has also required significant investments in human and IT resources.

While IFRS-17 is intended to bring uniformity to financial reporting in the insurance industry, it is clear that the transition has not been without its challenges. Some companies may struggle to comply with the new requirements, leading them to consider merging or selling their businesses. It remains to be seen how the industry will adapt to the new standard in the coming months and years.

Safaricom Announces Departure of Chairman John Ngumi and Appointment of Adil Arshed Khawaja to Board

Safaricom, the largest telecommunications company in East Africa, has undergone a change in leadership at the board level with the departure of John Ngumi as chairman. Ngumi had held the position for just six months and had previously been seen as an ally of former President Uhuru Kenyatta, serving as chairman for several state-owned enterprises including the Industrial & Commercial Development Corporation and Kenya Airways. In a statement, Safaricom praised Ngumi for his “industry knowledge and vast expertise,” but did not announce a successor. Instead, the company stated that a new chairman will be elected by the board in the coming weeks.

In addition to Ngumi’s departure, Safaricom has also appointed Adil Arshed Khawaja, a Kenyan lawyer with over 30 years of experience, as a director of the board. Khawaja currently serves as the managing partner at Dentons Hamilton Harrison & Mathews and is recognized as a leading name in the Kenyan legal profession. He has previously held a director position at KCB Group and was elected as the first chairman of KCB Bank Kenya Limited.

These changes come at a time when Safaricom’s mobile money platform, M-Pesa, has become the company’s largest revenue generator, surpassing voice services. The shake-up also follows the departure of several top executives from Safaricom over the past two years, including eight of the 11 C-suite seats. This has allowed the company to bring in new skills and shape its management according to CEO Peter Ndegwa’s strategy to maintain Safaricom’s profit trajectory.

The new administration in Kenya, led by President William Ruto, has expressed interest in utilizing Safaricom’s platforms for its Hustler Fund loan program and fertiliser distribution plan. It is unclear at this time how the changes in leadership at Safaricom will impact the company’s relationship with the government and its future direction.

Realme Expected to Launch Industry-Leading 240W Flash Charge Technology in Upcoming GT Neo5 Device

Realme is making headlines with the anticipated official launch of its 240W flash charge technology, set to debut in the upcoming Realme GT Neo5. This charging capability is the fastest currently available on the market, outpacing even the likes of Apple and Samsung, who currently top out at 20+W. The Realme GT Neo5 will be the first device to feature this technology, set to release in February of this year. The GT Neo5 series has already been certified in China and will include two models, the RMX3708 with 240W flash charge and the RMX3706 with 150W fast charge.

In addition to its impressive charging capabilities, the Realme GT Neo5 series is also expected to feature a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip and a 1.5K resolution high-refresh screen with a 144Hz refresh rate and high-frequency PWM dimming. This attention to both power and display make the GT Neo5 a highly anticipated device.

It’s worth noting that while the 240W flash charge is currently the fastest available on the market, it may not necessarily charge a device at that speed at all times. The charging speed can depend on various factors including the phone’s battery capacity and the charging cable and adapter being used. Fast charging technology can also generate more heat and potentially have a negative impact on a phone’s battery life over time.

Despite these considerations, Realme’s 240W flash charge is a noteworthy achievement in the world of mobile technology. As companies continue to push the boundaries of what is possible with fast charging, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for this aspect of device capabilities.
