GPO Huduma Centre reopens – Here is how to book an appointment online before visiting

The government has announced commencement of operations at the Huduma Centre located at GPO here in Nairobi. This comes after a brief closure that was meant to halt the spread of the current pandemic by exercising social distancing. Huduma Centres here in Kenya were touted as the most effective way to access government services and have been operational for a while now. However, due to the effects of covid-19 which is said to be easily transmitted from one person to another through touch and other exposures, operations were halted. Considering the nature of these centers which are mostly crowded with hundreds of Kenyans seeking government services, there was no option but to halt operations.

The ministry of public works has notified the public of its intention to reopen the GPO based Huduma Centre starting August 17 but on an appointment only basis. According to the ministry, this is aimed at reducing traffic that might otherwise underscore governments effort to reduce infections.

Kenyans visited these Centres to access various services from the government such as replacement of lost Identification cards, application of good conduct letters, application of birth certificates and even paying for services offered from various institutions.

Several organizations have resorted in utilizing technology and allowing workers to render their services from home; this was aimed at comparting any form of exposure that could allow the spread of the current pandemic.

Xiaomi Redmi 9 is on the budget-end price spectrum but with a surprising high-res panel

On multiple occasions, I’ve indicated just how buying a new smartphone is now more of a personal taste rather than the brand or what it says it does. The little-known Xiaomi Redmi 9 surprisingly has a better screen than much pricier alternatives – something I personally have become accustomed to than any other feature on a smartphone. I’d buy a phone with a decent number of pixels if given an option in a blink than any other feature on it. For a device that costs less than or around Ksh.15,000 depending on the amount of RAM you opt for, but packs a 6.53inch FHD+ (1080×2340 pixels) panel, its obviously one among few that offers a bang for buck if you ask me.

Now, I know most of you are probably still reeling from Xiaomi’s 10th anniversary unveiling that saw the company stretch limits way beyond with the Mi 10 ultra, it goes without saying, we might miss out if we focused more on what’s best the company has to offer than what we actually need, and in my case I really need this Xiaomi Redmi 9! My reasons are clear, although its not an AMOLED panel, I’ll still choose it over RAM, battery, Storage and processor for that matter.

Price in Kenya

Before we continue further, let’s first have a look at the current pricing of this device here in Kenya. For a combination of 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage, you’ll pay Ksh.14,500 while a 4GB RAM and 64GB internal model goes for Ksh.15,800 which in my opinion it’s a minor difference that makes less sense to go for the cheaper model – but you can if you want to.

Xiaomi Redmi 9 specifications

While we’re yet to physically test this model, I’ve got enough acquaintance with the Redmi series to personally recommend it. They’ve generally fared well and we’d be wrong to not seriously consider this model for those with a sub-15,000 budget.

Like I’ve indicated from the start, my main interest in this phone is based on a 6.53-inch screen with a 2340×1080 resolution that I honestly find to be quite a deal. Of course, there’s lots of affordable alternatives within the same price range but as I’ve said, none offers this kind of screen resolution.

When it comes to system RAM, our baseline usually staggers somewhere above 4GB for android devices. It’s good we have that option for just a few hundreds more which is not like a game changer to me.

Under the hood, we also get a competent Mediatek Helio G80 processor that’ll fare on just well on normal applications and even play some games without a stutter. There’s also a fairly impressive battery at 5,020mAh. You’ll get a quad-camera setup that consists of a 13MP main, 8MP ultra-wide, 5MP macro and 2MP depth-sensing camera while on the front panel you’ll have an 8MP selfie camera. And if it makes any difference, there’s a 3.5mm headphone jack and USB-C port.

How to make a conference call on Safaricom, Airtel and Telkom networks from a smartphone

Working from home has meant lots of conference calls to collaborate on various projects or assignments and so forth. While making these calls shouldn’t be hard with presence of various online video conferencing tools such as Google Meet, Zoom, Skype and even WhatsApp, not everyone has had access to stable internet. This has resulted in using alternative means such as cell phones which in its own is quite expensive.

You can still make a conference call here in Kenya on any of the three mobile service providers if you intent to have a meeting consisting of less than seven participants. And Yes, Safaricom has a limit on the number of recipients you can add to a conference call. If you have an android device or an iOS device, the process is pretty much straight forward as I’m going to illustrate below.

Charges for making a conference call;

There are no fixed or special charges we know of from Safaricom, Airtel and Telkom that are specific to those making conference calls. In most cases, standard charges apply, such as calling within the same network, other networks or calling abroad.

If you are making a conference call to two individuals on the same network like Telkom, and the standard rate per minute for anyone is Ksh. 2 then you’ll end up paying 2*2*1 per minute which is Ksh.4. anyone else who adds participants on the conference call will incur costs related to the added participants.

It’s a darn expensive option but seemingly the only alternative if participants do not have access to a stable internet connection. So, anyone who adds participants will be billed separately from the original caller.

How to make a conference call on Safaricom, Airtel and Telkom networks;

Android phone;

  • If you’re using an android phone, head over to your contact list and tap on one of the numbers you want to call
  • And if you have a dual sim phone, proceed with selecting the network you prefer for the conference call
  • Then once the call has gone through, press the back button to the dial pad
  • Once you’ve located the next contact, tap on it and hold
  • After all contacts have been added, you can then tap on the merge calls icon

iPhone

  • If you’re using an iPhone, in your contact list, tap on the contact you want to call
  • When the person answers, tap on the add call icon
  • The first contact will be temporarily put on hold
  • Once the second contact answers the call, tap on the merge calls icon

Samsung Galaxy buds live, here is what you need to know before buying and price in Kenya

There are many motivations as to why someone would consider buying Samsung’s latest earbuds; perhaps it could be because of their unique bean-shaped design or maybe, just want to have everything within Samsung’s ecosystem. Personally, I haven’t been keen to get them just yet, I’m kind of satisfied with affordable alternatives we have right now from the likes of Xiaomi. Since Apple unveiled the air pods, we’ve had almost the same design from various manufacturers year-over-year. Thanks to Samsung, we can at least experience something slightly different.

Why someone would consider buying the Galaxy buds

Unique bean-shaped design

As I stated from the beginning of this editorial, we all have varying reasons why we choose to buy something, and the same case is true for the Samsung Galaxy Buds Live. If you’re that kind of a guy who likes to stand-out from the crowd, then this could be a very interesting opportunity to shine once more, but for those of us who have a tighter budget and don’t necessarily care what everyone else thinks, there’s a good number of alternatives that might just be perfect for your daily use.

Unlike mainstream inner-ear headphones which look alike unless placed side by side, Samsung has somehow managed to stray away from the design and still produced headphones that are worth considering. I’m not sure if it’s the shape or color or a combination of both that somehow makes them look cooler placed side-by-side with Airpods.

It goes without saying these earbuds are pretty tiny, they’ll most likely fit in your ears to the extend someone will actually have to look to notice they’re in there.

Active noise cancellation

This could be a mainstream feature in 2020 but it’s important to notice noise cancellation tech from Samsung which on most occasions has been on point. Early reviewers have so far been impressed by the tech and considering their size, I think Samsung must have done a pretty darn good job.

Easy repairability

I don’t know if this should motivate someone in buying them but according to iFixit who tore the buds revealing components, there are a few items that can be swapped out easily in case you ever need to change them. For example, they’re powered by a rechargeable battery that is readily available online in case you need them replaced.

On the other hand, the wireless charging case packs a 1.81Wh battery, which is considerably larger than batteries found in the wireless charging cases for the older Galaxy Buds and Galaxy Buds+. In addition, the teardown reveals that most of the internal components are relatively modular and can be replaced independently.

Price in Kenya: we expect them to cost anywhere between Ksh. 15,000 and Ksh. 20,000

How to record a short video on your Xiaomi Redmi phone using a built-in screen recorder

A couple of times, you might need to record something on your phone’s screen; while android has this feature hidden within the OS starting from android 10, devices such as Xiaomi redmi phones come pre-installed with a nifty app within the tools folder to do just that. Whether you want to offer a tutorial on how to do something on your phone like using a certain application or just want to take a short video to upload on TikTok, using a screen record can literally save you a ton of otherwise tedious and complicated process.
