Infinix Zero 8, packs 64MP Quad-camera setup, 33w charger and a 90Hz screen refresh rate

Infinix Zero 8 is here with us, and it packs some top-level specs you really need to check it out. Days after Tecno unveiled the Camon 16 Premier series, Infinix has followed closely with a similarly equipped device that features a 48MP dual selfie camera setup, 64MP rear quad-camera, a 90Hz display panel and a 33W charger. It should be noted that both Infinix and Tecno brands are owned by the same parent company Transsion, so there could be a lot of similarities between their latest and greatest handsets.

What do we get with the Infinix Zero 8

The front panel features a 6.85inch FHD+ panel that houses a set of two selfie cameras in a hole punch cutout rather than a notch. The panel is said to support a 90Hz refresh rate meaning scrolling through items and playing games on the device should be a smooth endeavor compared to traditional 60Hz. The front selfies include a standard 48MP focal sensor and an 8MP wide angle camera that would come in handy when taking those group selfies.

The rear panel is flagged by a set of four cameras; 64MP primary sensor, 8MP ultrawide sensor and two 2MP depth cameras. The rear camera cutout sort of resembles a diamond shape rather than what we’ve got used to from other devices which embraces either a circular design or a rectangular one.  And just like the Tecno Camon 16 Premier, the selfies are equipped with dual LED flash while primary sensors come with a quad LED flash setup.

What is New?

Unlike Infinix models that came before Zero 8, there’s quite a number of additions on the latest device but we are going to focus on the 90Hz refresh rate on the screen and what exactly it offers since its one area that we’re just getting used to. The Zero 8 comes with 90Hz option selected out of the box, but there are three options; the latest 90Hz option, 60Hz option and auto switch refresh rate.

The beauty of having such an elevated refresh rate is an overall smooth experience when using the device, there are a few games that can utilize such a setup and you can always choose between the options for a couple of objectives such as a 90Hz to get the ultimate experience, 60Hz to save battery and Auto to jump between the options.

The fingerprint sensor is side mounted, something I’ve come to prefer than rear mounted sensors, but you’ll also have an option for face unlock if its something you want to use. Under the hood is Helio G90T soc, 8GB RAM, 128GB internal storage and can support up to 2TB MicroSD card if you’ll ever need it.

Realme 7 with a 90Hz display and a 30w fast-charger unveiled, packs latest Helio G95 soc

Realme isn’t just sticking to its guns when it comes to releasing new devices; the six-month release cycle is live and kicking despite the effects posed by the current pandemic. Today, the company has unveiled yet another device that has some interesting features to offer on a budget. Realme 7 is poised to be amongst our favorites when it comes to screen quality with above average refresh rate of 90Hz.

Details on availability here in Kenya are still scanty but the handset has already been priced in other regions like India and is expected to go on sale within the week with the base model offering 6GB RAM and 64GB internal for about Ksh. 22,000 and the superior model packing 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage for Ksh. 25,000.

What you should look forward

Without going into all the nitty gritty, Realme 7 is offering some great features for the price. To start off, the handset packs the latest Midiatek Helio G95 processor that should guarantee excellent performance as well as longer battery life.

We love the fact that a 90Hz panel was used instead of the traditional 60Hz panel at Full-HD+ (2400 x 1080) resolution. Users should experience smooth scrolls, great gaming experience and generally a faster interface. I understand dust is just settling on the current Realme 6 which was unveiled in the country just a few days ago, but something tells me, you’ll be better off holding for a while until the 7 is finally here.

Besides a great 6.5-inch Full-HD+ IPS LCD display with a 90Hz refresh rate there’s a punch-hole cutout housing a 16MP (f/2.0) sensor, at the top left. The rear panel is flagged off with a quad-camera setup that combines a primary 64MP sensor, an 8MP ultra-wide lens, a 2MP macro lens and a 2MP portrait lens.

As expected, you’ll be getting the goodness of android 10 of course with Realme UI out of the box and the phone should last a full day with a 5,000mAh battery supporting 30W Dart charging. Essentially, you can reach full capacity within 65minutes down from zero percent.

Best budget display phone you can buy here in Kenya in 2020 for less than Ksh.20,000

A fabulous display panel should be the first thing someone ought to look at when shopping for their next smartphone. It’s one component you’ll be interacting with more often than any other feature on your device and simply needs to be accorded the seriousness it deserves when looking to upgrade or just want an awesome device for the next year or so.

When it comes to my preferences, I’ll choose a beautiful screen over any other feature on a phone in a moment; plain and simple. And here is why I think you should too for your next device. There are a few smartphone display technologies that are used on current devices; IPS which stands for in-plane switching and AMOLED, commonly found on Samsung devices; however, I’m going to focus more on the IPS tech since this is essentially what you should expect on under Ksh.20,000 devices, with some notable exceptions that packs an AMOLED panel.

Why you should put the display panel above everything else on a phone

  • We interact with it more often than anything else

There are a couple of reasons or requirements someone would be looking forward to in their next handsets; and this differs from one person to another. But one component any user would interact with more often than anything else on a phone is its display panel. It makes more sense to look at something you consider awesome more often than regret your choice for the duration you own the phone.

  • Everything else depends on it

Whether you’re looking at taking some awesome memory shots with your device or want to play some popular titles like Fortnite, there’s no hiding you’ll need an awesome panel to boost your experience. A combination of usable pixel density, the size and of course the refresh rate should be the benchmark of all you want to do with your device. For example; great reading experience goes in tantum with enough pixels to produce crisp text and a higher refresh rate should guarantee a soother experience when playing games.

Best under Ksh.20,000 phones with an awesome display panel available in Kenya in 2020

Our soft spot for a smartphone screen is 1440p resolution, but something beyond 1080p on a less than 6.5inch panel should be usable. We have therefore listed some of our best choices when it comes to handsets with an awesome panel you should seriously consider in 2020.

This is by far our best choice in the best display budget phones. It packs a stunningly FHD+ (1080×2340 pixels) 6.53inch panel and costs only Ksh.14,500. Although not as vibrant as AMOLED panels, but the resolution is something else, text is crispier and images just pop to your liking.

  • Xiaomi Redmi Note 9

Slightly expensive than Redmi 9, but manages to pack the same number of pixels in a similarly sized panel. You can get the Redmi Note 9 for about Ksh.19,500 from some online stores which barely meets our cutoff price.
