OPPO unveils the OPPO Watch ECG Edition, capable of recording your heart’s electrical signal

OPPO recently unveiled its hyped OPPO watch in the country alongside the Reno4 smartphone, both devices are currently on preorder and customers can get the latest OPPO watch for Ksh.24,000. Customers who take advantage of the preorder period will also receive a free OPPO branded backpack.  The company has now unveiled yet another model of its top-rated wearable, but now with an electrocardiogram feature.

While everything seemed rosy and elegant on the OPPO Watch – more details can be found on our previous editorial here, there were some notable features missing from what we’d have expected from the likes of an Apple Watch. The smart wearable went as far as mimicking Apple’s design though with Google’s wear OS underneath and has since attracted more fans than what analysts expected. It totally seemed like consumers were eager on enjoying Apple’s design language but with a touch of Google’s software underneath.

The OPPO Watch ECD edition packs the same specs featured in the earlier models but with an electrocardiogram feature. In a nutshell, users of the new model will be able to measure their heart’s activities and get recommendations as to whether they’ll need a doctor’s attention or if they’re on a healthier side.

The electrocardiogram feature has had major success across the world with the Apple watch managing to save lives by warning of an imminent heart attack. And while the earlier models are available in two sizes, 46mm and 41mm, the ECD edition will sell in 46mm size only. The new model is already on sale in China for USD 366 (around Ksh. 37,000), but there’s no word on global availability.

As earlier mentioned, the ECD model packs the same hardware as earlier wearables from OPPO; featuring a 1.91-inch AMOLED panel with a 402×476 screen resolution, Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2500 SoC and an Apollo 3 co-processor. It’s also powered by the same ColorOS Watch based on Android and comes with a 1GB RAM and 8GB of internal storage.

Powering the wearable is a 430mAh battery that’s touted to last 40 hours with regular use and 21 days on the power saver mode. Users will be able to charge the smartwatch in no time, thanks to the VOOC fast charging technology.

Samsung announces the Galaxy S20 Fan Edition (FE) with a 120Hz screen in a global online event

Samsung has finally announced its Galaxy S20 FE in a global event that was streamed live on YouTube, the handset has some major upgrades on the display panel as well as in matters do to with photography. It comes with a smoother panel that’s pitted at 120Hz refresh rate, a triple rear camera setup and a large 32MP selfie sensor.

The company used the same chips found in flagship S20 series in the new S20 FE, meaning it should perform on the same scale as the current Samsung flagships. Samsung touted how their latest device fits perfectly with its line of accessories such as wearables and tablets. And as we already know, the company has three different S20’s on the market but with a steep price tag, on the other hand, the fan edition has some premium parts removed so it could be affordable to the masses.

Samsung has priced the new S20 fan edition at USD. 699 about Ksh. 70,000 though it might cost way above that when it finally comes to Kenya due to taxes and difference in exchange rates. The 6.5-inches panel sits in between the smaller S20 and the larger S20 plus with a 120Hz refresh rate. So, expect scrolling through the interface to appear more smoother than standard refresh rates (60Hz). Additionally, it comes with a flatter panel rather than a curved one and the resolution maxes out at Quad HD+ which is within what you’d expect on a premium level handset.

Design wise, there’s a plastic back which is somehow a downgrade from what you’d be getting on the rest of S20’s, but Samsung has opted for cooler colors which should mitigate any downsides. Consumers will have an option of choosing any of the colors which the company highlighted more during the launch event. The Galaxy S20 FE will be available in red, orange, lavender, mint, and white. These colors have been tagged as “cloud,” referencing to their matte finish that should hide fingerprints.

Other Specifications

Under the hood, we still get some premium choices like the rest of S20’s such as a 4,500mAh battery, wireless charging, 6GB of RAM, IP68 water resistance, expandable storage and a top-rated Snapdragon 865 processor. Samsung chose to downgrade the rear camera megapixels opting for 12MP on the main sensor, 12MP ultrawide and 8MP on the telephoto lenses.

Although the current pandemic wasn’t in Samsung’s mind when the it first decided to unveil the Fan Edition, the company has gone an extra mile to have it made as a direct response to current economic constraints. We should have the Galaxy FE here in Kenya in a few weeks before the year ends.

Huawei Y5p available at Safaricom shops with a Jisort na Bonga offer (Ksh.8,999 + 4,000 points)

Huawei’s budget focused Y5p is now available at Safaricom shops with a “Jisort na Bonga” offer where customers have the option of buying at discounted rates by topping up with their bonga points. The handset was announced several weeks ago and offers what some would say a “bang’ for your buck” kind of thing. In the offer, customers can buy at Ksh. 8,999 and top up with 4,000 bonga points instead of the full amount – Ksh.10,199.

Safaricom has been on a mission lately to reduce the amounts of Bonga Points within customer’s accounts by offering several alternatives for redeeming them, such as paying for airline tickets with Jambojet as well as purchasing electricity tokens. From the latest developments, seems like subscribers will also have a chance for getting the Huawei Y5p at discounted rates when they top up with Bonga Points.

The Y5p has some interesting specs rallied at the budget tier market such as a 5.45-ich panel the company is calling FullView. Under the hood, users will be getting 32GB worth of internal storage on the device and a modest 3020mAh battery capacity. There’s also 2GB RAM that should be enough for modest applications such as checking mails, browsing the internet and some light duty games.

At that price-point, we didn’t expect a lot from the device and most misgivings are forgiven, but one area I really have to mention is the display resolution. I’m a big fan of a quality panel and the Huawei Y5p seems to offer something just a tad-better than what we’d have expected. The panel maxes-out at 1440x720p which is slightly above the standard HD, and Huawei has correctly tagged it as HD+. With its under 6-ich portfolio, the overall pixel distribution is denser and text should look crisp while images look more vibrant.

The squarish rear camera setup alludes to that same feeling you get when you look at premium models that often have more than one camera, but the Huawei Y5p houses a single sensor at the back which should do fine on most occasions. After all, the likes of Pixels already convinced us we really don’t need that many sensors, what matters is the software bit doing all it can to make photos pop.

The handset is available in three colors; Midnight Black, Phantom Blue and Mint Green. The latter two are created in a special triple-coat paint process that gives the smartphone a unique sheen. Selfie lovers will have to be contended with a 5MP snapper; it can also be intuitively used to unlock the face using face recognition.

Under the hood, the phone comes with Huawei’s EMUI 10.1 which is based on android 10 and as it has become a normality, there’s an AppGallery pre-installed.

New law seeks to punish misleading online advertising and inaccurate mileages on vehicles

A new law that is up for debate in parliament, if passed, will seek to punish online retailers that provide inaccurate information regarding items being sold such as false mileage declaration in a bid to protect consumers from dishonest business practices. The new law is sponsored by leader of majority in the Kenyan national assembly Mr. Amos Kimunya.

It will be the first time to attempt changing a law that has been in effect since late 70’s. New recommendations will safeguard Kenyans from purchasing counterfeit products while upholding rights of registered owners of trade marks. Kenya is currently experiencing an upsurge in online shopping, partly due to the current pandemic, and some sellers have taken the opportunity to swindle unsuspecting consumers by selling them low quality products than initially stated.

A good example is car dealers who often declare false mileage information regarding the number of kilometers travelled who now faces prosecution is the proposed amendments are adopted by the national assembly. They’ll be facing a maximum fine of Ksh. 2 million or a five-year jail term or both from the current proposals.

Notably, car mileage has been absent in current laws despite Kenya experiencing an upsurge in motor vehicle sales compared to when the law was first enacted. Dealers have been accused on numerous occasions for altering odometers to downplay usage and depreciation.

At the moment, Kenya records more than 80 percent of used car importation and mileage has been the basis of determining their resale value apart from the year of manufacturer.  Consequently, government officials will now compare the declared mileage against source markets to determine whether the odometer had been compromised.

Kenya has seen more businesses resort to online advertising partly due to the increased access to the internet. Shoppers in the country can now easily buy something from another country online and wait a few days for it to arrive. Unfortunately, online platforms have also posed their own loopholes that often leave consumers exposed to malpractices.

According to the new bill, various unethical business practices have been grouped and are now covered under the proposed law, such as false trade description, false indications as to price and false representation as to the supply of goods or service.

OPPO officially introduces the OPPO Reno4 in Kenya, to retail at Ksh. 39,999

OPPO has launched the Reno4 in Kenya in an online event that was officiated by OPPO Kenya’s Product Manager Mr. Ernest Teigut. Teigut took the opportunity to highlight OPPO’s success in the country over the years after initially entering the market. In his remarks, Ernest said the Reno4 was intended to offer users with better experience.

OPPO Reno4’s design was motivated to offer users with an exciting experience the product manager says will maximize their artistic experience to the fullest. It comes with a slim industrial design while maintaining an exquisite back cover the company calls Reno glow. It basically references to the mate finish with a subtle glittery chassis that offers a more vibrant look that bring about that premium feeling.

The handset comes with a 6.4-inch dual punch hole display panel that despite the cutouts, it still manages to cover 90.7 percent of the front. It’s basically a few of those handsets that opts for an AMOLED panel instead of the more traditional IPS. Colors are therefore very saturated and blacks should remain truly black since each pixel lights itself and remain shut in case of a black background. It has a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels which way above what you’ll expect on a standard HD panel. Text should therefore look crisper and images more vibrant.

In terms of photography, Reno4 has a new feature tied to the portrait functionality that makes backgrounds appear in black and white while the subject remains in color, this is possible while using back and front cameras whether taking a photo or video. The front selfie camera comes with a 32MP sensor while the primary quad camera setup has a 48MP main sensor, 8MP Ultrawide, 2MP Macro and 2MP Depth sensor. The handset also comes with a monochrome video mode that basically captures videos in a single color. You just have to choose the color to be retained and everything else will remain in black and white.

There are also a couple of feature additions such as smart spying sensor that will basically check if someone else is peeking at the display and automatically hide details of any notification popping on the screen. Call it a gimmick but I think some of us could use such an innovative feature based on artificial intelligence mechanism. Other features include a 4015mAh battery, 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. Comes with a color OS 7.2.

Realme C15 comes to Kenya with a 6000mAh battery, Quad-camera setup for Ksh. 17,000

Since Realme opened shop here in Kenya, we’ve seen some of the best combinations of value and money thus far, it has unveiled some interesting gadgets within the budget segment that it’s just not possible to not consider them when shopping for the next android device at that price point. The latest addition to its range of products – the Realme C15 packs an amazingly large battery with a rear quad-camera setup for only Ksh. 17,000, which in my opinion could have been unthought of.

The Realme C15 has a specific target that it’ll wow with the amazing battery – obviously taking center stage from other features underneath. More than once, I’ve pointed out how my favorite feature on a smartphone must have something to do with the display panel, unfortunately, you’ll not find that kind of panel found on superior handsets, though still usable for the average consumer.

Realme C15 packs a large 6.5-inches display panel that many users will find joyful to use though slightly less that what we’d have wanted on a device with its price caliber. The panel maxes out at 720×1560 resolution, way below our benchmark of at least FHD and above, but many users probably won’t notice the difference unless they’re put side by side with a pixel-dense panel.

We also don’t get a faster refresh rate on the new device, so expect games as well apps to not feel faster or smoother when opening than what we get on cheaper phones. It would have been nice to see a device under Ksh. 20,000 running smoother and going toe to toe with more expensive ones.

All in all, the Realme C15’s highlight feature is obviously the large 6000mAh battery capacity, as much as it’ll be a stretch hoping for it to last several days, expect a significantly longer cycle and maybe if well used to go two or three days before requiring topping up.

For those who are looking forward to the device, it comes in three variants, 3GB/32GB, 3GB/64GB and 4GB/64GB. We strongly advise for the higher RAM model just because it’ll come in handy when running heavy applications such as Games if its something you hope to accomplish.
