Critical Power Plans to invest Shs100million in back-up solutions and renewable energy

Critical Power has embarked on a strategic plan of investing more than Sh100 million in provide power backup solutions and renewable energy to businesses in East Africa. The market segment which has seen little attention over the past years is set to receive a boost by the development ensuring businesses across the region are well equipped to cope with customer needs. The company seeks to exploit the growing need for power protection solutions occasioned by frequent power outages by providing power generators, uninterrupted power supply (UPS) and power inverter systems.

Critical Power will also offer alternative power such as solar, biomass and small hydro stations to businesses and homes.

Bardo Group, a new player in the online payment services sector in Kenya

Cost, technological complexity, control and lack of education are the major issues facing the growth of internet payment services in Kenya. Nokia Lumia users to make international and domestic calls using Viber App

Users of Nokia Lumia Smartphones will now be able to make international and domestic calls to mobile phones and landlines after the popular Viber app became available on their devices. The development comes after viber version 4.1 update was released on Nokia Lumia devices running Windows phone 8 operating system, effectively adding a range of new features to widen the chatting potential for the users. Viber is already one of the most-used messaging apps on the Windows Phone platform.

“This is a timely upgrade that permits Nokia Lumia users to call mobile and landline numbers as long as you’re connected to a 3G or Wi-Fi network, you’ll be able to place calls,” said Nokia East Africa Operative Products and Devices Manager King’ori Gitahi.

Facebook Messenger for Asha, Lumia and Nokia X

With support across all three Nokia mobile platforms, the popular private chat room, Facebook Messenger, is about to attract a whole new audience. This follows the introduction of the trendy chat app on Nokia X, Nokia Lumia and Asha devices. Doing away with likes, shares and personal feeds, the Facebook Messenger app intends to be a pure conversation app, concentrating on you having private conversations with your friends

Users will not need to install the full Facebook app beforehand, which will be an advantage to people running low on memory on their smartphone. With the app, users can see who’s online, create group chats and send photos and stickers, all from within the standalone app.

afb Customers to buy goods on credit at any Naivas Supermarket stores in Nairobi

Consumer finance company, afb, has entered into a strategic partnership agreement with Naivas Supermarket that will offer its customers the opportunity to purchase goods on credit at any Naivas stores in Nairobi and throughout Kenya over time. Speaking during the announcement of the partnership, afb’s Managing Director – Cards, Brett van Aswegen said that the company is excited to partner with one of the leading retailers in Kenya, Naivas Ltd, towards offering affordable credit card facilities to the mass market in the country.

“afb and Naivas will introduce the Naivas Retail Credit Card which is an unsecured, revolving credit card facility that allows customers to buy goods in Naivas stores on credit and repay with six (6) affordable monthly payments,” said van Aswegen.

Nokia rolls out new software updates for Asha touch phones

Nokia has started rolling out a new software update for its Asha touchscreen phones. The update will be available for both the single and dual-SIM variants of the following Asha devices: Asha 230, Asha 500, Asha 501, Asha 502 and Asha 503. The new updates include push notifications, and an updated Fastlane which now shows the notifications from the social platform like re-tweets and Facebook likes.

The camera experience on Asha will also be improved after the update offering a panorama mode and a voice-guided selfie feature. Photos will be stored automatically (or manually) on Microsoft OneDrive – each user has 7GB of free space.

Commenting on the new developments, Nokia East Africa’s King’ori Gitahi said Asha users will receive an important push notification letting them know once the update is available. Users can also manually check for the update by going to Settings > Phone Update.

“We are very focused on enhancing the user experience on all our devices. With this update, we have added voice guided selfie shots and panorama modes in camera, a power save mode for improved battery life, video stabilisation and parental control for the browser and Nokia Store access,” Gitahi said.
