Thuraya partners with Airtel Africa to bring mobile satellite connectivity to 17 countries across Africa

Thuraya Telecommunications Company, a leading Mobile Satellite Services (MSS) operator and Bharti Airtel International BV today announced an agreement to provide Airtel Africa customers with mobile satellite products and services across 17 countries in Africa. The partnership will provide Airtel Africa customers voice and broadband connectivity via Thuraya’s satellite network across the continent’s most remote areas. Commencing from May onwards, Airtel Africa will sell Thuraya’s products and airtime packages at their retail outlets and through their Enterprise account team.

Extending mobile networks into remote or rural areas presents both geographical obstacles and business challenges for connecting people in Africa. Thuraya’s satellite network helps bridge the digital divide by providing an immediate and cost-effective way for Airtel Africa to extend its coverage, while generating new revenue streams and providing vital connectivity. Thuraya’s mobile satellite service can address the diverse voice and data communication needs of Airtel Africa enterprise users across the mining, energy, media, government and humanitarian NGO sectors.

Catholic Relief Services (CRS) and Partners Showcase Information and Communications Technology Innovations to Fight Poverty

Catholic Relief Services is currently hosting the 6th Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for Development Conference (ICT4D) under the theme: “Building Resilience through Innovation”. The conference is aimed at showcasing the use of ICT in relief and development effort and will focus on the ways in which technology enables resiliency by supporting developing communities in reducing vulnerabilities and mitigating, adapting to, and recovering from shocks and stresses in ways that promote the health and well-being of its members. Scheduled to run for 4 days, the conference brings together a multidisciplinary audience that includes government representatives, multi-lateral institutions, international and local relief and development organizations, universities, and technology firms.

The continued success of the ICT4D conferences can be attributed to the opportunities and challenges arising from the fact that access to mobile and internet technology is becoming all but ubiquitous across the developing world.  Penetration of mobile cellular technology is fast approaching the 89% mark in developing countries and the penetration of internet usage is approaching 31% (International Telecommunications Union 2013 report). This explosion is ending years of extreme isolation in developing communities and providing poor people with new opportunities to engage in markets and access a myriad of health, education, financial, and advisory services.

AccessKenya to launch Security as a Service Solution in East Africa

Leading Corporate Internet and IT Solutions provider AccessKenya Group has launched a Security as a Service solution in the East African Market targeting the high-risk ICT environments and services sector. The solution, Managed Security Services (MSS) capable of full deployment within seven days after an audit, is a tripartite partnership venture with ICT Security firm, Security Risks Solution Limited and Internet Solutions Kenya Limited. While addressing  a breakfast meeting, Loren Bosch, the Head of Managed Services at AccessKenya and Internet Solutions said the new solution is able to capture real-time logs and alerts of manipulation of electronic files and any attempts to circumvent IT controls.

“We are introducing MSS as a single vendor solution with access to modules such as automated monitoring, Visibility, control and oversight, Cost savings, Reduced risk of obsolescence, flexibility and Security compliance. By deploying MSS, hosted on the AccessKenya and Internet Solution cloud, an organization will be able to free up critical human and financial resources”, he said.

MSS he explained, addresses one of the major failings affecting highly vulnerable environments and sectors such as banking, insurance and government revenue centers and that is non detection and reporting of incidents before they become crises.

Experts attribute this to a shortage of skilled personnel coupled by the high Capex requirement for developing a fully secure inhouse environment.  In 2013 over 71 percent of all attacks were directed at end user Devices and Personal Computers and another 51 percent targeted server systems for weaknesses.

“As the bring your own device (BYOD) trend continues at the workplace, we shall continue to see information security risks being exploited both from internal and external vulnerabilities such as poorly deployed business applications and downloads”, said Jason Finlayson, Director Security Risks Solution. According to Finlayson intrusions are rarely discovered in time by the victim, not until they are locked out through highly evolved theft of authentication credentials or malicious takeover of genuine applications.

“This means that organizations need to treat privacy as both a compliance and business risk issue to reduce regulatory sanctions and high impact security events that may lead to reputational damage and loss of customers due to privacy breaches”, he explained.

Nokia targets Kenya app developers with Imaging SDK 1.1 to create imaging-based apps

Kenyan developers are set to benefit from the introduction of the latest version of the Nokia Imaging Software Development Kit (SDK) which will enable them to create imaging-based apps that will run from devices to tablets as well as desktop PCs, with the same code. This follows the announcement by Nokia that the latest imaging SDK update was now available to Windows and Windows Phone app developers free of charge. With the Nokia Imaging SDK 1.1, developers will have access to a powerful library of exciting image manipulation tools, which makes creating the next generation of imaging apps for Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8.1 devices quicker and easier. Designed from the ground up with performance and a low memory footprint in mind, Nokia’s Developer Relations lead in East Africa, Moses Sitati, said the library’s functions don’t put a strain on the user’s device, which makes editing high resolution images swift and engaging.

Since the company launched the first SDK in July last year, the company says more than 1,500 apps soon appeared employing the technology. With the new update, developers will be able to embed features usually reserved for ‘higher-end’ Lumia devices which means zooming and rotating will be much more fluid fashion on devices such as the Lumia 520.
