Safaricom, Orange, Yu, and Airtel Kenya APN (Access Point Name)

According to Wikipedia, Access Point Name (APN) refers to a computer protocol used to connect user’s computers to the internet using a mobile phone network. In a more advanced language, Access Protocol Name (APN) means a configurable network identifier used by mobile devices when connecting to a GSM service provider. It’s also the APN which allows mobile service providers to allocate Internet Protocol (IP) addresses to various devices accessing internet via its network. To be more precise, the Access Point Name (APN) identifies the IP Packet Data Network (PDN) that a mobile device data user wants to communicate with. Let me cut short of the near ambiguous technical aspects involved when establishing internet via a GSM service provider on your computer and mobile devices such as smart phones, tablets and laptops, to the Access Point Names (APN) of Safaricom, Orange, Yu and Airtel (Kenyan mobile network providers).

For those who have at one time used a universal/unlocked broadband modem to access internet on their computers knows exactly the importance of an APN and how they differ from one service provider to the other; mobile phones also do require the provider’s Access Point Name (APN) to access the internet. To enjoy internet connection from all the four main service providers in Kenya, that is Orange, Airtel, Yu and Safaricom using an unlocked broadband modem; it’s a prerequisite to configure the correct APN for that particular network provider. Each service provider has its own Access Point Name, most locked broadband modems are pre-installed with the necessary APN so users won’t need to configure by themselves; however, unlocked devices usually demand APN configuration before connecting to the internet.
Here is a list of Access Point Name (APN) for Safaricom, Orange, Airtel and Yu;
Safaricom APN (Access Point Name)
  • Safaricom APN: Safaricom
  • Access Number:*99#
Orange Telkom Kenya APN (Access Point Name)
  • Orange APN: bew.orange.co.ke
  • Access Number: *99#
Bharti Airtel Kenya APN (Access Point Name)
  • Airtel APN: ke.celtel.com
  • Access Number: *99#
Yu Mobile APN (Access Point Name)
  • Yu APN: internet
  • Access Number: *99#
(Leave user name and Password fields empty)
How to configure a Broadband Modem’s APN (Access Point Name)
  • Choose Tools on the control panel, then select Options
  • Navigate to Profile Management, enter provider’s name under profile name
  • Select Static under APN, then enter correct APN

Dstv Kenya Bouquets, Common Subscribed Packages

After listing channels and their respective bouquets available on most pay TV service providers in Kenya such as Gotv Kenyaand Zuku TV, it’s only typical that Dstv Kenya gets a similar fair share of scrutiny and appreciation. Dstv which is owned by Multichoice and Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) in Kenya, by far enjoys a lions share of Kenya’s pay TV market segment, not forgetting that Gotv is also their product. Unlike other pay TV providers in Kenya which utilizes DTT and Fibre optic platforms, Dstv transmits its signal via satellite; this explains the vast areas covered including remote locations. Multichoice Kenya has various bouquet products through Dstv for the local market with prices reflecting the quality and number of channels contained. Apart from Dstv mobile product transmitted via DVB-H and currently available only in Mombasa and Nairobi, other Dstv products are available almost everywhere through satellite transmission.
