TECNO Pouvoir 4, what you need to know before buying in Kenya

While the much hyped Tecno Povoir 4 is readily available in Kenya for Ksh.14,999, we’ve detailed our opinion in the following editorial so you just don’t fork out a handsome 15k without knowing what you’ll be getting in return. In my opinion, smartphones have adopted names that are rather overrated, I’d prefer calling a spade a spade and Tecno Pouvoir 4 scores well in some interesting areas while slumping in others just so you could get a reasonable price tag. Away from the name, and by the way my first impression for the Pouvoir series was greatness in design which I’m yet to feel but understandable from the cost. There are some interesting areas such as battery that probably will appeal to many at the same time repelling power users in areas that count most.

While the company claims the smartphone can endure four straight days on a single charge, it’s probably a marketing gimmick as lithium ion batteries are yet to make such milestones in reality; though, we comment Tecno for packing a 6000mAh battery in this device. large screen loyalists would probably be at home having a 7inch device in their possession but we also acknowledge the strain this is going to have on the battery.

On the brighter side, Pouvoir 4 packs a set of 4 cameras; a 13MP main sensor, a set of two 2MP cameras and an AI lens that we expect to utilize various lens in different conditions so your snap shots can pop. On the front side, there’s a an 8MP selfie camera that’s complemented by dual led flash to make those selfies worth sharing.

For 15k, we expected the company to offer more than just 32GB internal storage and at least 4GB or more RAM but you’ll have to be contented with what you get as the Pouvoir 4 comes with only 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage. I might be hesitant to get this device if I’m a heavy gamer as you’d probably experience a ton of lags under load, but for light purposes, the difference might not be worth your concern at this point.

However, Tecno has incorporated some gaming features so you don’t feel left out such as a magic button that can be used as fire key in arcade/shooting games as well as a PUBG focused Intelligent scheduling system resources to ensure a high-quality PUBG game experience while throttling when the display if off to saves more than 50% of battery capacity.

Equity bank and Mastercard Foundation partner to supply solar powered gadgets to students

Following suspension of institution-based learning activities, Equity bank and Mastercard Foundation have teamed up to supply solar powered devices that will support over 14,600 students in the Wings to Fly and Elimu scholarship programs. Most of learning activities shifted to radio, TV and online sources but a good number of Kenyan learners still lack resources or access to services that would ensure continuity in their education.

In response to the current lockdowns imposed in various parts of the country, learning in institutions was untenable, hence most institutions adopted various technologies to offer lessons to learners across the country. Equity bank in partnership with Master card foundation has availed solar powered devices to learners in a bid to ensure they continue accessing lessons currently being aired on Government-owned radio and TV stations. The financial institutions will also provide students with a monthly stipend during this difficult period between June through August to enable access to essential food and personal items.

Following the effects of the corona virus, all learning institutions in the country suspended activities within institutions and instead opted for broadcast channels and digital platforms. Most families in the country experienced difficulty coping with the situation as they can barely meet basic needs and couldn’t afford to acquire necessary hardware for online or broadcast learning.

Scholarship recipients in the Wings to Fly, TVET and Elimu program in partnership with the Government of Kenya, which mostly includes students from poor families, this meant a return to households that could not provide access to learning. EGF moved to support learners by designing a program that would equitably help students and their families to continue their studies at home.

Students received various devices that would aid in their quest to continue learning even while at home such as solar lamps, radios and a mobile charging unit for cell phones.

Google is exploring possibility of bringing “Explore Maps” feature to Google Photos

Google is finally considering bringing one of the most sort after feature – “Explore Maps” to Google photos. If unveiled, the feature will allow Google Photos users to view a Map of the photos and videos taken by their location. Users could only access this feature via a third-party app – “Photo Map for Google Photos” released sometimes last year. This will not be the first time a tech company has made a third-party feature native to its products owing to popularity.

Thanks to some researchers who often tear up application’s code to reveal hidden or upcoming features, we get to see some of the ongoing works on certain apps though it’s not always guaranteed to make a debut to the masses. While these features often end up being released, it’s not uncommon to see a company pull off the feature altogether before release.

According to reliable insights from the Google Photo’s version 4.52 that started rolling out on the Google Play Store, android developer Alessandro Paluzzi spotted a new “Explore Map” feature within the application. It’s a pretty nifty addon that gives users control to group and view photos as per location.

How “Explore Maps” feature in Google Phots work

After you’ve launched the Photos app, followed by switching to “Search” tab, there’s a new widget below the “Places” section that you can either tap on the “Explore Map” option or select the suggested locations underneath to filter photos taken from that particular location.

For those tapping on the feature for the very fast time, you’ll get a prompt with an introduction to the feature. Explore Maps is designed to help you relive the places you’ve been by exploring your photos that have location data, including shared photos you’ve saved. This feature utilizes location data stored in the photos by your camera’s GPS, Google Location History, and detected landmarks within the photos themselves.

These locations may be highlighted by a heatmap to show you areas you’ve frequently taken pictures. While the feature is in full working mode within version 4.52 of the app, it’s yet to be rolled out to the masses and there’s no guarantee that Google actually plans to do so.

Twitter is considering bringing emoji reactions on your timeline

Twitter has secretly been testing reaction emojis on people’s timelines which is a substantial upgrade from the current “heart” tweets in public. The feature is more or less like Facebook’s take only it works completely different from the one’s implemented on the rival network. Reaction emojis will give users variations in showing their feelings on public tweets which provides them with a proper response as well on how they actually feel about tweets.

According to app researcher Jane Manchun Wong, wo’s been credited with cracking apps open to discover upcoming or features that are hidden within the application, the social platform has introduced an experimental panel of emojis that lets you choose from different reactions to a tweet.  The panel is located right next to the Retweet and Retweet with Comment buttons.

Even though Facebook has graciously availed a similar feature to its users for a while, Wong discovered twitters’ version isn’t an exact replica. Though we’re still not 100 percent sure the feature will be unveiled as is as the social network could decide to rework it further before mass rollout.

From the images posted by Wong, there could be an option to React with Fleet, its Stories-like tweets that disappear after 24 hours. Twitter has been testing Fleets over the past months and found that it’s been seeing less instances of abuse when the disappearing messages are concerned.

Microsoft’s “Your phone” app now let’s everyone control music playback on their android devices

Since exiting the smartphone business, Microsoft has been relentless in coming up with companion apps on the two major operating systems that complement users who use windows 10 on their personal computers. The software giant has unveiled several convenience applications in the android ecosystem such as the Microsoft launcher that brings the old tech giant’s goodies to the mobile platform with nifty additions such as Bing wallpapers, Microsoft news and so forth.

One such app, is the windows 10 “Your Phone” app, that lets users’ pair either an iPhone or an android device with their personal computer so they could easily access some features across the various platforms. There are of course a lot of features that users can in turn access across the two platforms such as responding to notifications, accessing text messages as well as receiving phone calls right on your computer.

For android users, besides features that have been on the app for a while, they’ve been always a need to control your music playback on the phone within the app. In fact, most users have been hoping for the feature to be rolled out, many saying it could really come in handy especially while working at home.

The feature basically allows users to control music currently streaming from their phones, whether it’s locally saved on the phone or playing online. This includes music from major streaming apps such as Spotify, YouTube Music, or Apple Music, without necessarily moving away from their workflows. Within Microsoft’s “Your Phone” app, users can easily control the source of music currently playing and skip tracks when needed.

To have access to the music playback control feature, user’s PC’s must be running latest windows 10 version (at least October 2018) update and have an android phone running android 7.0 Nougat or later. Needless to say, the music app on your device has to support music controls as well which is practically almost every smartphone out there.

Xiaomi Mi Band 5 is now official, here is the specifications and price in Kenya

The much-anticipated Xiaomi Mi Band 5 we recently highlighted has now officially launched. The band offers incredible upgrades over the previous model for almost a similar price tag. Xiaomi’s bands are mostly praised for offering a perfect combination of features while maintaining a reasonable price tag and are used by many people across the world as fitness trackers.

Xiaomi Mi Band 5 offers ample upgrades over the previous model

In comparison with the previous model, the Mi band 5 comes with a slightly larger display that sums to an overall increment of about 20 percent over its predecessor. On top of it, users will get an additional 100 watch faces to choose from featuring some of the popular characters in animated series such as Case Closed, Genesis Evangelion, Hatsune Miku and of course SpongeBob SquarePants.

Watch faces from the animated shows will be accompanied by matching colored bands; meaning, if your band comes with a yellow band, then you’ll most likely have similar themed watch faces. Similarly, for those who’d have black versions, will get watch faces themed with the same color.

The second nifty upgrade pertains to the charging system. Unlike the previous model which required users to remove the tracker from the band to charge, Mi band 5 integrates a new magnetic driven charging system that attaches on the charging dock. Two electrodes stick out at the bottom of the tracker and automatically attaches to the dock. The upside of the new charging systems is, users of the older models will not use old accessories to charge the new band.

Alongside the band, Xiaomi is also unveiling new dual-toned straps comes with a black part wrapping the fitness tracker which might set off the illusion that the steps are connected to the two far ends of the body instead of being an entire removable/replaceable strap.

Xiaomi Mi Band 5 will start to officially ship as from 18th and if you are as impatient as I am, then you got to grab one from the online stores such as AliExpress. The band is expected to cost around $27 (Ksh2,800)
