How to pay your National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) penalties through M-PESA for self-employed Kenyans

Are you self-employed and in urgent need to settle your NHIF penalty before it’s too late? Well the process couldn’t be easier, especially after the insurer unveiled an M-PESA option to do the same. The National Hospital Insurance Fund is a government owned institution with a mandate to offer insurance cover to Kenyans. Just like most insurance companies, those who subscribe to the NHIF cover (probably anyone who’s currently employed and a few self-employed Kenyans), must contribute on a monthly basis for the cover to remain active. Those who are employed probably need not worry about penalties as in most cases, these contributions are done by the employer.

However; for self-employed Kenyans, the situation is totally different. There are various variables that come into play, for example, you might not have cash to pay for your monthly premiums in time or if it accidentally slips your attention before the deadline which is 9th of every month. It’s also important to note in case you’ve missed to send in your monthly contribution, you’ll not be able to access the cover until these penalties have been paid.

I’ve compiled a simple guide on how self-employed Kenyans can pay for their National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) penalties through M-PESA, the process is very simple and no different from the common LIPA NA MPESA transactions for those who have used them.

How to pay your National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) penalties through M-PESA

Monthly penalty for not paying on time is Ksh.250 and can be paid through M-PESA using below simple steps;

  • Go to your “MPESA” menu on your device and select “LIPA NA MPESA
  • Enter the NHIF Business number – which is 200222
  • Type in your ID Number as the account and put “y” at the end so the transactions could be treated as a penalty i.e (22997848y)
  • Enter Ksh.250 for the month defaulted
  • Enter your MPESA PIN then send
  • You’ll receive a confirmation text message of the transaction.

Xiaomi Unveils Redmi Note 7 with a massive 47MP Sensor, 6.3inch Screen and Costs Less than Ksh.15000 in Kenya

On paper, Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 specs dwarfs several top of the line devices we’ve seen so far from the common denominators. It houses a massive sensor we’ve only seen on Nokia devices and a bezel-less display that has a water-drop notch – meaning everything has been minimized to furthest possible extent to achieve a 6.3inch display in an almost compact body. I’m not going to review this device at least at this point since we’re yet to put our hands on one; but it feels just right to mock specs we’ve seen on flagships from Samsung, Apple and Google – these are by the way unofficial bigwigs in the sector.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Specs

One would easily have guessed to expect half as good specs on the new Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 considering a rock-bottom price tag it carries, but let’s face it; this device is – assuming everything stays as announced, a potential contender for super users. At the same time, I wouldn’t want us to get over our heads, there’s so much that’s done in the background to achieve a super photo for example. A 47 sensor on its own wouldn’t do much, there’s a lot of software optimizations that has to be done that makes photos taken on the likes of iPhones pop at night and day alike.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Camera Sensor

While officially pulling the wraps off Xiaomi Redmi Note 7, Lei Jun, Xiaomi’s CEO, noted the device to be the first of the new Redmi sub-brand. Since the biggest highlight of this handset was its massive sensor, let’s take a deeper look at the specs again. The Redmi Note 7 is actually the company’s first smartphone to come fitted with a 48MP camera sensor. And it’s not just any sensor, but one from a reputable manufacturer – Samsung’s ISOCELL GM1 sensor. We therefore don’t expect any let downs when in real-life action. Alongside, Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 was its closest sibling – Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 pro with a similar sensor though from Sony.

Redmi Note 7 Display and Design

Besides the camera, turn on to the front side and you’ll be impressed by an almost full screen display complemented by a 2.5D curved design a glass.

Battery and Storage

The battery has 4,000 mAh capacity and supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 4. And as expected with phones coming out now, the Redmi Note 7 has a USB-C port which comes with a regular 5V/2A charger in the box, but you can add a fast-charging brick with an extra buck

It’ll come in some interesting colors that include Blue, Twilight Gold and Black. You’ll have various options of internal storage and ram; between one with 4GB with 64GB internal or 6GB RAM with 64GB storage. You can beef-up space with an external microSD, up to 256 GB.

UberASSIST for the disabled and Senior Citizens lets them use specially trained driver-partners with cars that accommodate folding wheelchairs and walkers

Uber has unveiled UberASSIST in Nairobi– a service specially designed for seniors and the disabled in our community. Unlike current Uber services, UberASSIST features specially trained driver-partners who have cars that can accommodate folding wheelchairs as well as walkers. The service intents to empower riders with disability and the elderly by allowing them access Nairobi city more conveniently without worrying about a bout having someone accompanying them.

UberASSIST has been available in two other African towns – Johannesburg and Cape Town since 2017 before finally rolling out in Nairobi in 2019. There’s a cut-throat competition in Kenya’s taxi-hailing industry which features the likes of Taxify, Little cab and several motorbike focused apps forcing providers to improve and diversify their service offering. In Mombasa for example, Uber unveiled UberTuk that utilizes “tuktuk’s” owing to the popularity this means of transport has enjoyed in the region while similarly launching UberBoda in Nairobi.

UberASSIST will therefore score an advantage for Uber going into 2019, catering for a segment that had long been neglected by other taxi companies. Considering both Taxify and Little are yet to unveil a similar feature, I’d imagine most riders who fall within these two categories will feel more at peace riding with Uber and also gives an assurance knowing for example one can bring in his or her folding wheelchair.

How to Request uberASSIST for elderly and the disabled in Nairobi

  • Launch your Uber app as you’d do normally
  • Enter your destination (where you intent to go)
  • Swipe left and select uberASSIST – appears after ChapChap, UberX, Boda and just before Uber’s premium service – Select
  • Confirm pick-up location and request a ride

Nokia 106 (2018) Review – Dual SIM Capability and an FM Radio lets us Forgive So Much That’s Missing

Let’s take a minute and forget all the glamour associated with iPhones, Pixels and Galaxies and appreciate just how much feature phones effectively served their purposes back in the day. In fact, it’s fair to imply all the technologies housed in modern top of the line handsets evolved from these devices. Most importantly, we could communicate via phone calls, send text messages back then just as we do nowadays except for of course a few additions that include those fancy looking emoji’s and so forth. Nokia 106 (2018) will not turn heads around when mentioned, you’d be correct to suggest it is not even comparable to the most basic android smart phone; however, what happened to all the excitement we used to have knowing that you’d be guaranteed a battery life of at least a week or so – under normal usage?

Battery life is just awesome

Well, Nokia 106 (2018) will take you back in the day, to experience just a bit of those good old days with minor adjustments that reflects some of additions we now get on the so called smartphones. On paper, this device is said to last up to 21 days on standby, and 15 hours of talk time which by the way is not far from reality. I took a leap of faith to operate solely on this device for a week – I couldn’t go longer as you might have already guessed, but the experience in terms of battery life was astounding. I’d give anything to have my iPhone last this longer.

Price at its lowest

Gone are the days when phones were priced depending on their feature set rather than whose who, I bet it wouldn’t be impossible to get two different handsets with exactly similar specs but priced very differently, hundreds of shillings’ price tag has become the new normal with both flagship iPhones and Galaxies costing more than Ksh. 100,000. Consider this for a moment; with Nokia 106, you’ll still call and text at a fraction cost; basically doing exactly same fundamental functions for Ksh. 2000.

No WiFi, no Bluetooth, no GPS but you get an FM radio

If you are looking for a device to send those Bluetooth files, browse a bit of websites, receive and send WhatsApp messages, then this isn’t your phone, you’ll be better off with a galaxy sitting at the lower end of Samsung’s table. There’s no WiFi, no Bluetooth, no GPS; but hallow! You get an FM radio on the new Nokia 106 2018 version. Personally, I don’t listen to FM radio’s that often but at least it’s good knowing it’ll be accessible when you need it.

Design and Built Quality

The design is pretty cheap – I’m not complaining, it’s plastic and what Nokia did was to use inherent coloring meaning it’s color runs through the material, this in turn makes scratches less detectable.

Dual Sim Functionality

Nokia 106 supports Dual Sim capability, a feature that makes as forgive so much that’s missing on this device.

Conclusion

The Nokia 106 2018 version will not impress everyone, it’ll not see pockets of many pundits out there just as it has a brief moment in mine; however, it has its strengths that justifies everything you’ll miss. If you are looking for a device that’ll last longer than current smartphones could offer, or even a tad longer than closest handsets in the days of yore and has minimal features except for dual sim functionality and an FM radio, then this is your guy, otherwise you’ll be better off looking somewhere else.

Conmen minting thousands of shillings from innocent Kenyan job seekers in the name of checking their Credit Reference Bureau (CRB) listing status

Scammers targeting naive job seekers here in Kenya have devised high tech ways of extorting money in the pretense of checking their CRB status as a prerequisite to advancing to the next stage of job interview. With time, they’ve evolved to the point where they can easily disguise as legitimate and dupe unsuspecting Kenyans into sending cash, in most cases through mobile money services such as MPESA in the hope of advancing to the next stage of the interview.

The process involves some sophisticated techniques to look natural and legit. First, as you’d imagine, they’ll first register a custom domain name such “example.co.ke” usually similar to the name of fake company to be used. This ensures they secure an email address that looks official such as “info@example.co.ke”. We have all come to appreciate and relate some bit of seriousness with companies owning a custom paid email address, let’s face it; no one really takes any seriousness in a company that uses free email services the likes of Yahoo!, Gmail, hotmail and so forth.

To appear official and established, a decent website is then created and published on the domain with content written to describe nonexistent services and office locations that are mostly made up.

The next step is usually placing a job advert mostly online, both on their website and popular job listings sites such as “brightermonday” to reach a wider audience. You will be surprised on the amount of effort these conmen put in just so they can appear real; from job requirements to duties and responsibilities you’ll be expected to perform.

Once you submit your application, and because they need to swindle as many people as possible, you will certainly get back an email with an attachment of what supposedly is a form from their designated credit reference bureau. A point to note, these scammers in most cases disguise as financial institutions either in banking or insurance sectors so they can seem normal to check your CRB status.

A while back, one such scammer swindled a friend of mine after applying for a job on ‘brightermonday’. It’s so heartless to see these people play with lives of others. Below is a copy of email he received. It’s so heartless to see these people play with lives of others.

How to tell if a job advert is fake ;

  • First of course they’ll ask for money
  • Phone contacts on their websites don’t go through except those provided to receive MPESA payments.
  • And if they get you on round one, be sure to be contacted again for an interview, this time with cheap reasons to scam you like money for drinks and so forth.

How to deposit cash or make payments at Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) Automated Teller Machines (ATM’s)

I bet majority of us are yet to make use of some really important services that are already enabled at numerous teller machines countrywide; if you belong to that group that only uses ATM’s to make cash withdrawals, you aren’t alone. Personally, I’ve grown to assume the only and main function for an automated teller machine was to dispense cash for account holders, but ever since I was introduced to making monthly house rent payments at Barclays bank ATM’s, I’ve come to appreciate just how this feature can save you long queues to simply performing these transactions at one’s convenient time with minimal traffic. Having gone through this process for a few months now, rent payment has been so easy, fast and most convenient more ever that I’d be foolish not to share.

I’ve devised a simple guide on how you can make cash deposits at KCB ATM’s without having to visit banking halls that are open only during official working hours or bank agents that might not have enough float to credit your account. Please note not all banks, ATM’s and accounts support this facility, on Barclays bank for example, the account holder must have enabled this service and only currency notes in denominations of Ksh. 1,000 and Ksh. 500 are allowed.

How to make instant cash deposits at Kenya Commercial Bank Automated (KCB) Teller Machines (ATM’s)

  • Locate a supported ATM machine (not all ATM’s will support this feature)

If you don’t have an ATM card of the account holder/beneficiary, follow below steps;

  • On the ATM menu, select “deposits and mobile
  • Select “deposit” then “account”
  • Enter the account number of beneficiary
  • Put the total cash in the slot
  • Wait for the machine to process your transaction
  • Confirm transaction then pick your receipt

If you have an ATM card of the account holder/beneficiary, follow below steps;

  • Insert your debit card and enter the “PIN”
  • Select the “deposit” option then put the total cash in the slot
  • Confirm the amount, then pick your receipt

cash deposits can be done at the following KCB ATM’s

FULIZA M-PESA overdraft facility allows users complete M-PESA transactions when they have insufficient funds in their M-PESA account

Are you low on M-PESA balance yet desperately in need of cash to make that important transaction? Whether it’s a utility bill with a Paybill/Till number or just want to send cash to someone with an emergency somewhere, FULIZA M-PESA could come in handy as it’ll allow you complete that transaction even when low on MPESA balance. You could borrow cash using the already available Mshwari or KCB-MPESA loan facilities to sort out your problem, but what if you’re already on the MPESA menu and probably servicing an existing loan or already reached your maximum loan limit; this is where FULIZA M-PESA is way better than all alternatives.

Overdraft facility already exists with many banking institutions; it’s surprising how the likes of FULIZA M-PESA services took this long even after loan facilities becoming available early in time on our mobile phones. FULIZA M-PESA service is definitely viable at least according to Safaricom alongside with partners who got the much needed go ahead nod from Kenya’s financial regulator – Central Bank of Kenya.

There are no known stringent requirements to use FULIZA M-PESA, all You need is be an M-PESA registered customer with an active Safaricom line; so if you are already using MPESA, you should be good to go and you can hold as many accounts as the number of MPESA lines you have.

How to Subscribe / Start Using FULIZA M-PESA

  • On your phone’s Dial pad, dial *234# to subscribe via USSD Code
  • Then select ‘Fuliza M-PESA’ to opt in.
  • FULIZA M-PESA has of course a set limit on the amount you can access which you can utilize as long as you’re within the limit.

The following services on FULIZA M-PESA can be accessed via a USSD Code “Dial *234#

  • Check your FULIZA M-PESA limit
  • Check FULIZA M-PESA balance
  • Access FULIZA M-PESA mini statement

However, each time you transact using Fuliza, you will receive a text message with the respective outstanding Fuliza amount. The more you use and repay FULIZA M-PESA, the more chances you would grow your Fuliza M-PESA limit just the way you’d normally grow mobile loan limit.

How to repay FULIZA M-PESA

As long as you have an outstanding overdraft, any funds received or deposited in your M-PESA account will automatically be used to clear your outstanding Fuliza M-PESA.

Just as Kenya is Prepping to Phase out Old Passports by August, here is the Application Process and Requirements for Getting the New e-Passport

Just as Kenyans are being encouraged to apply for the new modern e-passports, most applicants have already expressed frustrations at the process some pointing out tediousness and unrealistic requirements to get one. I’d give this one to the government for trying to modernize services and even allowing online application; but one would wonder, just how is it so easy to acquire Kenyan citizenship as compared to applying for travel documents? Honestly I don’t get it, and as it seems I’m not the only one.  A tweet we recently saw from our immigration department providing guidelines on the, immediately got backlash from several concerned citizens who attributed the process to being time consuming and unrealistic owing to just what one needs to qualify for one.

Before we take an intimate analysis of the process necessary to be issued with an e-passport, first let’s see the benefits of new Kenyan e-passport.
