iPhone owners with Fortnite installed are cashing-in big time, being sold at premium costs

Things don’t look like they’ll be getting easier any time soon as far as Apple and Fortnite are concerned, and iPhone owners are taking every bit of opportunity to cash-in with massive pricing on iPhones with Fortnite already installed. It doesn’t really make any sense for the average consumer, but if you’re a fan of both iPhone and Fortnite, it might just be about time to have one in case the two giants don’t ever make-up

For those of us who have been anxiously following the current fiasco between iPhone maker and Fortnite developer – Epic Games, you already know the antitrust lawsuit and the exchange of blame games between the two companies that has resulted in one of all-time loved game to be removed from App Store. Both Google and Apple removed the Game from their respective app stores following violations of their terms and people somehow having been pricing iPhones with the game at exorbitant prices.

Reports from various tech sites such as iMore indicate that some iPhones are priced up to USD 10,000 equivalent to Ksh. 1,000,000 just for having the precious game on it. And make no mistake, it’s not a typo, some iPhone owners are apparently raking in a million Kenyan shillings for a single device!

A simple search on eBay would easily show some iPhones with price tags some of us would think it’s a hoax but apparently a real deal. For android owners, unfortunately there isn’t any monetary aspect attached to the current fiasco as you can easily install via a stand alone APK file if you really need it.

How to send money from your MPESA account to someone in other East African countries

Ever since Safaricom announced the MPESA Global facility, it has become more easier to send money from your MPESA account to anyone within the East African region. All you have to do is follow some simple USSD prompts on your mobile phone and within minutes, the recipient in Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania and somehow also Botswana should get a notification of the transfer.

There are two options you could use; MPESA app or USSD method, personally I prefer the USSD option as it can easily be accomplished on any type of phone as long as it has a Safaricom SIM with an active MPESA account. With the app option, you’ll need to have a smartphone and access to the internet which is a bit tedious.

Steps to send money from your MPESA to Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Botswana and Burundi

  • on your mobile phone, dial *840# and tap on send
  • Then select Send money abroad, tap on send
  • Followed by “send to mobile number”
  • Then choose country
  • Enter the recipient first name followed by last name
  • Enter the phone number in international format
  • In put the amount between Ksh. 101 and 70,000
  • You’ll be asked to state the source of funds
  • And then the purpose
  • After which you’ll need to confirm the transaction

KEPSA unveils virtual platform for private school learners to access education materials

The Kenya Private Schools Associations – (KEPSA) has unveiled a platform that’s aimed at ensuring learners in private institutions continue with their education regardless of the current pandemic. Learning materials will be made available to all private entities from a single source dubbed “Masomo Iendelee, Linda Mwalimu” meaning Education to continue and save the teacher.

While the government is doing everything to ensure learners in private institutions continue accessing their education, private schools have been adversely affected as a result of the novel corona virus with many teachers now turning to hawking to provide for their families.

The latest development from KEPSA comes amid uncertainty in private institutions and is therefore expected to bring some hope to over 11,600 private schools in the country that faced total shut down struggling to pay tutors, rents and overhead costs.

Speaking on the development, KEPSA’s chairperson Mutheu Kasanga said the move was to bridge the digital divide by ensuring online learning for the poorest child and put some money in the teachers’ pockets.

Before launching Masomo Iendelee, Linda Mwalimu virtual learning platform, private schools utilized various technologies to educate more than 2.4 million students and, in some instances, the platforms were unreliable, underscoring any efforts to tutor learners.

The latest move was made possible by a partnership between the private school’s association and Absa bank Kenya. In addition, KEPSA has also sort partnerships from digital education system and content provider EduVOD to activate the virtual schools, provide content and training for teachers.

The platform is expected to run concurrently with the government’s Community Learning Initiative that will use teachers employed by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). The current crisis has forced many private institutions into financial crisis since a good number of them solely depend on fees paid by learners to operate.

Schools will offer their own charges to use the platform and are expected to enroll anyone from any part of the country.

Around mid of May this year, Airtel announced a partnership with UNICEF that would allow customers to access various learning resources with a free data pass. This came as various institutions halted school-based activities instead turning to e-learning option. As of now, Airtel customers can still access several resources without having to buy data bundles. This includes popular platforms such as coursera, alison and edex.

In the partnership, both organizations were aiming at empowering learners with free access to remote learning resources that would somehow mitigate the effects we’re currently facing brought by the novel corona virus. With access to various materials online, Kenyans have turned to furnishing their knowledge by pursuing various online based causes such as programming which is available on various platforms such as those mentioned above.

MultiChoice unveils DStv Explora Ultra and DStv Streama decoders with YouTube and Showmax

MultiChoice has unveiled the long awaited DStv Explora Ultra and DStv Streama decoders with 4K capability and both YouTube as well as Showmax buttons respectively. This was revealed during the Pay Tv’s annual content showcase where it gets to detail some of the upcoming content as well as services. The two devices are coming with new features that are not available on current decoders such as 4K capability on the Explora Ultra and streaming services on the Streama counterpart.

Customers will now be able to stream content from third party providers such as Netflix in 4K video quality on the Explora Ultra PVR. This is a major upgrade from current decoders even though the Pay TV service provider is yet to unveil 4K content of its own. It should however be noted that Netflix and YouTube already have 4K content and DStv has been lagging behind as competition eats into a once almost monotony business.

Commenting on the two devices during launch, the company said the DStv Explora Ultra would bring two worlds together by supporting streaming apps on its platform, thereby adding depth to available content. Since the devices will come with a built in WiFi radio, it’ll make it even easier for users to connect to the internet – MultiChoice added.

Additional features include those that are currently available to PVR users such as Catch Up, BoxOffice as well as Showmax. Users will also be able to enjoy content in Dolby Atmos and comes with a new remote control.

The Explora Ultra includes features previously available to PVR users, including Catch Up, BoxOffice and Showmax. The addition of streaming apps makes the DStv Explora Ultra the “must-have” device for customers wanting an easy and simple way to enjoy content across many services, MultiChoice said.

Using third-party streaming apps will require an active subscription

In a move that’s seen as managing its revenue flow so no one chooses to do without let’s say DStv channels but continues using Netflix, the provider has limited use of third-party apps to only those with an active subscription. No new changes will be needed for customers migrating from the old Explora model. They’ll be good to go once they unplug the old model and plugin the new one. DStv Streama will also support 4K content but unlike the Explora, it’s a streaming-only device. Users will be able to enjoy services like YouTube, Showmax and play music via the Joox app.

Pay TV service providers in Kenya with Maisha Magic and respective channel numbers

Maisha Magic East and Magic Plus channels are obviously one of the most desired channels to watch with thrilling local as well as international content here in Kenya. I’ve been getting numerous requests from friends as well as colleagues on whether the channels are available on all Pay TV providers here in Kenya; sadly, there are just a few providers who have it onboard and on specific packages.

Both channels are owned by M-Net and prides themselves to showcase some of the best content in East Africa within the general entertainment genre. This includes local dramas, series, comedy, lifestyle, reality shows, telenovellas as well as music. If you have any of them on your subscription, you should enjoy a 24-hour entertainment in some of East Africa’s amazing content.

As I’ve indicated earlier on, Maisha Magic East and Maisha Magic Plus are only available on select Pay TV providers in the country; sadly, you won’t find it on Zuku, StarTimes, Bamba and other providers except for Mutichoice owned Dstv and GOtv.
