Copia’s Closure: Kenyan E-commerce Platform Ends Operations, Lays Off All Employees

In an explosive development, Kenyan e-commerce platform Copia is said to be terminating the services of all its remaining 1,500 employees. The affected staff is set to receive termination letters tomorrow. This comes as a blow to the company, which has recently suffered from extreme financial troubles and is going into administration—a huge downward spiral for the startup, which was promising at its inception.

Company Background and Funding

Copia Global, founded in 2012, was supposed to transform e-commerce in Kenya by taking goods and services to customers in rural areas. With a good number of years in operation, Copia had raised a substantial amount of venture funding, amassing $123 million across eight rounds. This week, the now eight-year-old company finds itself in a switch back to sustaining its business.

Layoffs and Date of Administration

The company had recently laid off 25% of its Kenyan workforce and suspended its operational activities in Uganda back in April. In fact, the country was hit in late May when Copia announced its administration status. At the time, administration consultancy KPMG, led by Makenzi Muthusi and Julius Ngonga, was selected to oversee the administration.

Key Places of Operation Shut Down

After announcing the administration on Friday, Copia ceased operations in a number of key towns, including Eldoret, Meru, Embu, Kericho, and Naivasha in Nakuru. In addition, operations in Machakos have been affected, with employees in the aforementioned towns now on leave. This was a tough decision, but necessary, to temporarily stop serving our customers in Eldoret, Meru, Kericho, Embu, Machakos, and Naivasha,” said Anne Mwihaki, Copia’s Director of Human Resources, after the company indicated plans to resize and reshape its business model.

Financial and Administrative Constraints

The company is said to have had money to pay its workers in the month of May. Makenzi Muthusi, one of the administrators appointed, said that under the administration’s guidance, the plan was to try and come up with a plan that has a lower burn rate until Copia can be profitable. However, with the redundancy of its entire workforce, things are looking very bleak for Copia.

The Way Forward

A significant roadblock to Copia’s restructuring and achievement of profitability is just now surfacing: the complete layoff of its employees. The company’s vision to make e-commerce services more accessible to rural and underserved communities is now more uncertain than ever. For Copia, the ability to bounce back remains to be seen, marking the potential end of its operations.

The story of Copia is a case study in the start-up world and one that underscores the uncertainty and difficulties associated with business, no matter how well capitalized. As it makes the final steps under administration, it remains to be seen what broader implications exist for the Kenyan e-commerce landscape and its various stakeholders.

Bolt Kenya Launches “Flood Assist” Category to Aid Flood Victims

Ride-hailing platform Bolt had inked a deal with the Kenya Red Cross in an effort to support Kenyans affected by recent floods. A new “Flood Assist” category on the Bolt app will allow riders to contribute to relief efforts, where the online taxi operator will contribute a percentage towards those affected by recent floods that have been recking havoc across the country.

Bolt will provide an initial amount of KES 5 million, aiming to gather a total of KES 10 million from this category. Every ride’s income in this category will contibute 5% towards aiding people affected by the recent floods.

The initiative targets those impacted by the devastating floods, which caused loss of life, displacement, and property damage.

“We’re launching ‘Flood Assist’ with an initial KES 5 million to encourage Kenyans to join our flood relief efforts,” said Linda Ndungu, Bolt Kenya Country Manager. “This allows us to leverage our platform and significantly help those affected by these terrible floods.”

Official reports indicate that at least 228 people have since died, 72 are missing and 164 have been injured as a result of the floods. Over 223,000 people have been affected, with 163,210 evacuated in Nairobi County alone.

Bolt’s partnership with the Kenya Red Cross will guarantee that collected funds are utilized for supplying relief food, relocation assistance, food, water as well as providing hygiene amenities in affected regions. Considering that the government-supported response to flooding crisis is currently led by the Kenya Red Cross, it holds expertise in making sure resources reach their intended recipients.

“We appreciate Bolt’s commitment to aiding flood victims,” said Dr. Ahmed Idris, Secretary-General of the Kenya Red Cross. “This collaboration strengthens our reach and brings help where it’s most needed. With Bolt’s partnership and initial donation, we can provide critical support like food, shelter, and medical aid.”

Bolt encourages all Kenyans to participate by using the “Flood Assist” category, with every ride contributing to their KES 10 million goal. Every trip taken in this category will significantly improve the lives of those affected by the floods.

CA Initiates Recovery Efforts to Restore Internet Services Following Submarine Cable Cuts

The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) announced the beginning of a recovery process to restore regular internet services in the country, disrupted by deep-sea fiber optic cable cuts.

Mr. David Mugonyi, the CA Director-General and CEO, informed media outlets yesterday that the Authority received reports about intermittent data outages and congestion on submarine cable internet traffic flow into the country.

Mugonyi stated that, after discussions with industry stakeholders, the Authority confirmed a deep-sea fiber optic cable cut at the Mtunzini teleport station. This cut is affecting various submarine cables serving Kenya, such as Seacom and the East African Submarine System (Eassy).

“We want to inform both individual and corporate consumers that the recovery process has begun,” Mugonyi said. However, internet service could still be intermittent and slow for a few more days before full restoration.

He also said that the Authority has directed internet service providers to reroute their traffic and is keeping a watchful eye on this matter, ensuring incoming as well as outgoing internet connections remain accessible.”

He explained that the East African Marine System (TEAMS) cable, which is not affected by the cut, is being used for domestic internet traffic. Additionally, the redundant route to South Africa has been activated to minimize the impact.
