Safaricom’s M-Pesa Re-certified by GSMA: A Milestone in Mobile Money

The GSMA has re-certified Safaricom’s M-Pesa, sealing its place as the clear leader in mobile money transfers and payment across the world. It is a global initiative that ensures better safety, transparency, and reliability in mobile money financial services.

Safaricom explained that this re-certification affirms the group’s ability and commitment to safe, transparent, and dependable financial services offered to millions of customers across the world. This step also entails enhanced trust among consumers and strengthened commercial partnerships.

Safaricom chief executive officer Peter Ndegwa said this certification didn’t come easy. “This certification is a seal of assurance to our customers that indeed we have put measures in place to guarantee the safety of their funds, protect their rights, and assure high-quality customer care.”.

The Global Mobile Money Certification that M-Pesa acquired in 2018 was based on an independent assessment of the provider’s ability to offer safe services, protect the rights of consumers, and struggle with financial crimes such as money laundering and financing of terrorism. It met rigorous criteria for the protection of customer funds, security of services, data privacy, and management of the risk of fraud.

With about 31.5 million active users, having processed over Sh40.2 trillion in transactions annually as of March 2024, M-Pesa has remained relevant in ensuring financial inclusion and better living all around the world.
