Soma na Telkom data Bundles are postpaid and tailored to the University of Nairobi students

The current stay at home environment has driven many institutions including university campuses to embrace technology by adopting e-learning to continue offering tuition to students. And to achieve an effective e-learning strategy, both students and lecturers need to have internet connection wherever they are; this has led many institutions in the country to team-up with various broadband internet service providers in the country to tailor educational packages that are affordable.

Telkom Kenya has unveiled a tailored and reliable mobile data solution for the students, members of faculty and staff of the University of Nairobi (UoN), to enable them continue learning even while at home. Fixed unlimited internet connection is still limited to mostly urban centers in the country, with most rural dwellers depending on mobile service providers such as Safaricom, Airtel and Telkom.

Even though most of these learning institutions are doing everything possible to continue offering learning lessons to students, we must appreciate that no one was really prepared for the current social distancing orders and if not all, most learners in the Kenyan rural setting stand to be adversely affected. Internet access remains a luxury to many rural areas in Kenya with minimal coverage by mobile networks coupled by lack of resources by people in those areas.

The Soma na Telkom Bundles, are monthly post-paid data bundles that have been customized to meet the needs of the University’s 40,000 plus population, to continue working and studying wherever they are. Currently Kenya’s top learning institution has 13 campuses with 35 Faculties, schools, institutes and centers.

The University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Kiama GITAHI acknowledged the e-learning mode of teaching brought along cost efficiency, whilst expanding options for spacio-temporal accessibility. He also pointed out the benefits of e-learning which provides a unique opportunity for continued learning even when the lecturer and students are physically apart.

On his part, Telkom’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Mugo KIBATI said the company continued to put communities that it serves at the center of the room, in everything they do. He continued by adding that they keep on assessing the viability of alternative avenues that can enable them to go about their daily lives, cognizant of the need for them to stay home as much as possible.

How the University of Nairobi students and staff will get Soma na Telkom bundles;

The University’s staff and students will be onboarded onto the e-learning program, once they receive Telkom SIM Cards from the telco’s robust chain of touch points across the country. Once the SIM cards are activated, both university’s students and staff will then be able to access internet wherever they’ll be.

Telkom Kenya recently partnered with Loon, the Alphabet company working to bring balloon-powered Internet to Kenya, and has so far received all regulatory and Cabinet approvals to begin flying balloons in the country. These balloons will be dispatched from Loon’s sites in the United States, and are expected to arrive in the country sometimes in the next few weeks. Four balloons have so far arrived in the Kenyan airspace and are being used to expedite network integration testing.

The Loon service is expected to utilize Telkom’s 4G LTE Internet solution to connect unserved and under-served communities in Kenya. Initial coverage areas have already been identified, starting with Nairobi, Nyeri, Nakuru, Kitui, Nanyuki, Narok and into Kisii.

How long it takes mobile service providers to replace inactive lines and issue them to new users

The contract between subscribers and mobile service providers in the country is solely depended on their continued active use of their lines. For this reason, if a mobile number is left unused for some time, it’ll most likely end up being issued to a new subscriber. Top mobile service providers in the country including Safaricom, Airtel and Telkom, will wait for a period of not more than six months since the SIM card was last active on their network to declare it dormant and issue it to the next subscriber looking to join their network.

Why someone would want to abandon a current mobile number for a new one

There are plenty of reasons why someone would want to abandon an existing mobile number in favor of a new one. These reasons range from voluntary reasons to those forced by circumstances. I do not want to divulge myself into the political arena but they sure do offer a perfect example of those individuals who replace their mobile numbers voluntarily. On many occasions, once someone wins an elective post especially here in Kenya, their predictable next phase include cutting lose all of their links to friends or people they deem demanding who otherwise are naïve voters.

However, at the same time, someone would want to disassociate himself from a certain number by circumstance which may involve disconnecting from old self or people with ill intentions. Some mobile numbers from Safaricom, Airtel and even Telkom have been involved or still run criminal syndicates aiming to fraud unsuspecting Kenyans. These criminals usually do not stay with that number for long after accomplishing their mission, and sometimes end up in the hands of innocent Kenyans.

I remember a while back when a friend went to Safaricom customer care center and bought a new mobile number for personal use only to later learn the number had been used to borrow several mobile loans. Safaricom was not in a position to assist, vaguely advising my friend to contact those specific loan companies to explain that he indeed was a different entity.

How long Safaricom, Airtel and Telkom take to deactivate unused mobile number

  • Having used SIM cards from all the providers in Kenya, it takes about six months for your number to be deactivated but it takes a little longer for it to be issued to a new subscriber- almost a year.
  • In some cases, you’ll have a grace period to reactivate your number by just loading it with airtime.
  • How to check when your Safaricom, Airtel or Telkom number will be deactivated: just check for your airtime balance and identify the date when its expected to expire. In most cases is usually within six months.

How to avoid your mobile number being deactivated and issued to a new subscriber

  • Make sure you’ve registered your phone number properly with the respective telecommunications provider.
  • At least ensure you’ve loaded airtime in a span of less than three months. If you do this your line will always stay active in their database.

If you’re travelling outside the country and plan to be away for more than six months, dedicate someone who will ensure your number stays active by loading and using airtime at least once a month.

Safaricom to provide free Airtime, SMS and Data to frontline health workers as well as the ministry

Responding to a request by the Kenyan ministry of Health through the cabinet secretary, Mutahi Kagwe, Safaricom has agreed to provide communication support in the form of airtime, sms bundles and data to the health workers in charge of the current pandemic. The support which the Kenya’s biggest telecommunications provider estimates to be equivalent to 195 terabytes of data, 10 million voice call minutes and 33 million SMSs will be utilized by critical Government healthcare workers for the next three months.

The development comes amidst increased effort from both the government and private sector to normalize the activities in the country which has so far been under strict social distancing state with non-essential workers now working from their homes, schools resorting to e-learning rather than institution based and traffic flow between counties restricted in affected areas. Safaricom will therefore avail communication resources at both the county and government level to responsible health workers.

Health workers and ministry officials responsible for critical areas in handling current pandemic will receive;

  • Government health workers will each receive a monthly bundle consisting of 12GB data + 600 voice call minutes + 2,000 SMSs. The ministry will be in charge of identifying those who qualify for this support.
  • On the other hand, the Afya House where the National Command and Control Centre is will be connected to 100 Mbps Internet.
  • While 15 members of the response unit will get a one-off bundle consisting of 50GB data + 3,500 voice call minutes + 10,000 SMSs

The cabinet secretary acknowledged the current crisis saying that communication should be the least of their worries adding that the team needed a seamless communication especially between frontline teams, the Command Centre and their loved ones. he therefore mentioned how the contribution by Safaricom to support over 5,500 Government healthcare workers will go a long way in helping them execute a coordinated national response.

Safaricom on its part through their CEO Peter Ndegwa, agreed how the gallant frontline healthcare workers were the first line of defense against the pandemic and needed to be appreciated by facilitating their communication as they continue discharging their duties.

Safaricom has so far donated Ksh 6.5 billion in the form of initiatives targeted at supporting its customers as well as the country from the negative impact of the pandemic through interventions in financial services, transport, education and healthcare.

Airtel Kenya now offers free data access to longhorn e-learning portal for students at home

As everyone is now turning to e-learning a midst the uncertainty we currently face, top mobile broadband service providers in the country – Safaricom and Airtel have specific data offerings for students to access learning materials online while at home. While Safaricom is offering a special 100MB elimu bundle to access educational content on Viusasa, Longhorn e-learning and Shupavu web, Airtel on its part is promising access to the longhorn publisher’s portal free of charge.

Educational institutions in the country have since closed down and most of them have resorted to e-learning in a bid to ensure learners are not disadvantaged by the current situation. Some institutions have gone as far as purchasing teaming up with telecommunications providers to purchase data for learners such as we witnessed with the KCA university earlier on.

The education sector remains one of the largely affected sectors in the current stay at home era where everyone has embarked on technology to work, learn or exercise. Technology at the same time doesn’t come cheap especially for the average Kenyan out there and we are glad to see some of this tech firms take initiatives to ease the burden on learners who now need internet access more than ever.

For homes with unlimited fixed internet access especially in the Kenyan urban centers like Nairobi the burden to access content online might not seem as real as those in the rural areas and we assume this is the specific group being targeted for the education bundles such as the “elimu data bundle”.

How to access Longhorn e-learning portal using Airtel Kenya free education data

While there are many e-portals and mobile applications currently available for Kenyan learners, Airtel Kenya has instead opted to team up with Longhorn publishers – a well-known education material creator in the country.

  • As expected, first you need to have access to Airtel broadband internet. This can be achieved by either using your mobile phone as a hotspot or an access point with airtel SIM card.
  • You don’t necessarily need to have active data on your device, but mobile access must be enabled if you’re using a mobile phone.
  • Head over to Longhorn e-learning portal here: https://elearning.longhornpublishers.com/
  • You should be able to access the portal and perform various activities without data charges on the airtel Kenya network.
  • To access other e-learning portals or streaming services such as YouTube on Airtel network, you’ll need to purchase their crazy affordable amazing data bundles by dialing *544#. You’ll have an option of buying data valid for 24hrs, 7days, 30 days or 90days.

How to purchase Youtube bundles on safaricom network

YouTube has become a daily phenomenon most of us can’t do without especially during this stay at home times, it’s one place some of us find solace in going about our usual activities whether its Music, some LIVE TV action or most importantly a guide to those daily workouts. However, fixed unlimited home internet is still scarcely available to many Kenyans and data bundles has almost become a basic need to communicate and access content on the internet.

Whether its for kids to access educational materials or just want to watch some videos on YouTube, in places where there’s no access to unlimited internet, purchasing data bundles dedicated to YouTube consumption could be cost effective than just buying data for general use.

Why you need dedicated YouTube bundles;

  • Its cost effective, especially if your intention is to use the data exclusively to access YouTube content. For instance, buying daily data on the Safaricom network for general use at ksh20 will see you part with 50MB’s worth of data. In comparison, for Ksh20, you’ll get a total of 200MB’s usable within 24hrs.
  • Limit usage by other applications. Whether it’s a corrupted app doing its rounds in the background or mistakenly launch an app that requires data, if you purchase YouTube data, it’ll not end up being gobbled without using it for the rightfully intended purpose which is accessing content on YouTube.

How to purchase YouTube Bundles on Safaricom network

  • On your Safaricom phone, dial *544*20#
  • On the next screen, select YouTube. Some options maybe available such as Showmax at the writing of this article. Enter the number next to YouTube in this case enter “1”
  • On the next screen, you’ll see a message “Get 200MB YouTube Bundle @20 valid for 24 hours”
  • Choose your preferred method of payment “1” for Airtime or “2” for M-Pesa
  • You’ll receive a confirmation message from Safaricom. You may proceed to access content on YouTube.

During the stay at home period, most companies and consumers have turned to technology to access content for individuals, while companies are trying to connect with customers as they make out how employees could still work from home.

Churches and mosques continue to stream their services to congregations via YouTube.

How to unsubscribe from Safaricom’s Skiza tune service

Skiza tune service allows Safaricom’s subscribers to set a custom ringtone or sound that callers listen to before you receive their phone calls. The service which is available to anyone on the Safaricom network has since been commercialized where you can subscribe to a certain sound or song and charged a small fee from the creator.

Since the service was unveiled a few years back, Kenyans have opted in some funny messages and songs that if the caller is up to it can be entertained while the recipient reaches for their phones. And while some of us are not interested in the service, for the few that opt in and no longer wanted to continue using it, there’s a simple way to unsubscribe from the Skiza Tunes service.

How to unsubscribe from the SKIZA TUNE service

  • Dial *811#
  • From the Skiza options, tap on ‘Manage My Tune’.
  • Choose Skiza tune
  • On the next page, select the tune you want to unsubscribe from
  • Tap on “Delete” and press “Send”, That’s it!

Here is how you can get the Google Pixel Experience without owning a pixel phone here in Kenya

The android ecosystem is flooded by different tweaks that comes in the form of launchers, skins, themes and even UI (user interface), but the world over has come to appreciate the Pixel phone which eliminates any form of manufacturer branding, carrier bloatware to have what most refer to as the android experience. It makes sense to associate the pixel phones to have the true intended android experience since both hardware and software come from the same company.

Android skins slapped on top of the android OS by most manufacturers such as Samsung’s touch wiz, Oneplus oxygen OS, LG’s UXI and HTC’s sense may come with additional functionalities but they’re not always less of hiccups. In fact, most of them tend to slow down devices and the likes of Samsung are known to duplicate their version of apps such as Gallery and Music Player instead of utilizing Google’s built in alternatives that work better in most scenarios.

By including their own version of apps, you’ll find that these smartphones come with less internal usable space available as some of it has to accommodate the apps. One of the reasons I’d rather not purchase a smartphone from a specific carrier even with subsidized costs is the presence of bloatware that ultimately interferes with true android experience.

On the other hand, pixel phones have gained a credible reputation even though they joined in on the smartphone hardware sales late in the game. They’ve less bloatware and preinstalled apps can easily be uninstalled with just a tap. Carriers and manufacturers often make it impossible to uninstall their bloatware without rooting or rendering your device’s warranty void. In any case you’ll need to have some technology know how to do this.

1.      How to get the Pixel experience on your phone by installing the Pixel Launcher

The easiest and un complicated way to have your phone look just like the Pixels would be installing the pixel launcher. You’ll still need to have some basic knowledge of installing an app from unknown sources since the launcher is not available for other devices on the Play Store. There are numerous pixel launcher ports you could use instead to achieve this just as there are several Google camera ports that work exceptionally well on other devices.

2.      How to get the Pixel experience on your phone by installing a custom ROM

If you happen to own a HTC, Oppo, Motorola, Xiaomi, some LG’s, Galaxy phones, Asus including other brands that I haven’t mentioned here, there’s a very high chance there’s already a pixel experience ROM out there. Installing a Pixel based android custom ROM is a sure way to make your device run and behave just like the Google Pixel phones. Just head over to google and perform a simple search of “Pixel Experience ROM for – your device”, if there’s a custom ROM out there that supports your device you should find it without a hustle

3.      Buy a Google Pixel Phone as a last option

Our editorial is all about having the ultimate pixel experience without owning a pixel phone, but if you’d rather not go through all the hustle involved especially installing a custom ROM, then better buy a Google pixel phone.

Recycle your old android phone by installing latest custom android ROM and a new battery

Have you ever owned an old android smartphone you dearly loved and felt like it could offer some oomph if given chance? There’s a clever way you could bring it back to life with a little hard work, but which is worth it in the long run. Smartphones have evolved in the last five years to accommodate new technologies as well as modern designs, but not all of these new features are essential in the day to day activities. In fact, some pundits out there argue that there’s very little which has changed to date, some go to an extend as prefer older designs especially those found on devices such as older HTC metal enclosures like the HTC 10.

Requirements of Recycling your android phone with latest custom ROM and new battery

There are some minimum requirements your old device should at least meet to be worth recycling. As much as you’d want to recycle your beloved android device, without available custom ROM’s to install and accessories such as batteries, the hustle might not be worth it. In such a case, you’d be better off buying a cheap device instead.

  • A quick look at the xda forums, you’d easily tell if there’s a custom ROM based on the latest android version supporting your device. In my opinion, this is a must for a device to be worth consideration.
  • Secondly, the latest version of android would require at least a minimum of 2GB ram to run without hiccups, I however prefer 4GB as my bare minimum to have a second look at the device
  • Smartphone batteries are based on the lithium ion technology which degrade over time. It’s highly unlikely that a handset aged three or more years would effectively function without replacing the battery.
  • Something worth consideration also is the complexity of the repair process. Whether you want to change the display panel, charging port or in this case battery, it’s always a good Idea to have a look at the process of performing that repair. Having used the HTC 10 for example, I learnt just how its almost impossible to have the battery replaced without damaging the display panel. And most of these devices with an inbuilt battery would require special tools to carry out the repair, if this can be accomplished by a professional, you’d rather consider that.
  • Your device must have unlocked bootloader. Some manufacturers such as HTC have a simple process you could unlock the bootloader.

How to finally bring back your old android device to life

Having taken the above requirements into consideration, the process of reviving your old device might require some bit of know-how, so I suggest you buckle-up. At this point, I assume you’ve checked out at xda forums and established availability of a candidate ROM with the latest version of android to install on your device.

If you still have some battery capacity juice left in your device, then you might not need to have it replaced, after shelf third party batteries might not have the same capacity as the original one or something could go awry wrong in the process.

  • First, replace the battery if need be
  • Then proceed to install the latest custom ROM. You’ll need to make all the necessary requirements needed to install the custom ROM such as unlocking the bootloader, installing recovery software and of course updating to the necessary firmware version. Failure to follow some of these steps could render your device useless.

Reviving an old device comes with its own merits, especially if the latest notch generation doesn’t excite you. In fact, its almost impossible to get a phone with such a study-built quality like back in the days when most manufacturers embraced full metal builds.
