George Odhiambo has been appointed as the new Managing Director of the National Bank of Kenya (NBK). In his new role, he will take over from Peter Kioko, who has been serving as the acting MD since June 2022. George is a highly experienced banker with a wealth of knowledge in the industry.
George brings a wealth of leadership experience to the role, having held various leadership positions in banks both locally and internationally. He was most recently the MD of BPR Bank Rwanda Plc, where he played a key role in strengthening and growing the bank’s operations. Prior to that, he was the MD of KCB Bank Rwanda Plc, and has been with KCB since 2009, serving as the Head of Business Analytics for KCB Bank Kenya.
The NBK Board of Directors has expressed confidence in George’s ability to lead the bank to future success and growth, stating that he has the skills necessary to execute the bank’s business strategy of innovation and growth. His appointment has been warmly welcomed, with KCB Group CEO Paul Russo commending George for his contribution to the growth of the Rwanda business.
George is a highly qualified professional with an MSc in Pure Mathematics and BSc in Mathematical Statistics from the University of Nairobi. He has also acquired several leadership certifications, including a Practitioner Diploma in Executive Coaching and a Postgraduate Diploma in Corporate Governance from the Academy of Executive Coaching, UK, and the Centre for Corporate Governance & KCA University, respectively. He is also a member of the COMESA Business Council Advisory Board and chairs the Banking Sub-Sector Committee.
NBK’s third-quarter results ending September 30, 2022, showed a profit after tax of KShs. 886 million, down from KShs. 1,172 million in the same period in 2021. However, net interest income grew by 14% from the previous year to KShs. 6.9 billion, indicating that the bank is on a steady path of growth.
George’s appointment is a clear indication of NBK’s commitment to driving innovation and growth. With his extensive experience and proven leadership skills, he is well positioned to lead NBK into the future and help the bank achieve its strategic objectives.
