‘Dstv Walka’ in Kenya, Mobile TV Outfit from Multichoice

Multichoice has unveiled a new mobile device dubbed ‘Walka’ in Kenya under its Dstv Mobile product that will see subscribers watch their favorite channels on the go. Dstv Walka consists of a handheld device capable of receiving DVB-H mobile TV signals currently available in Mombasa and Nairobi, it will enable viewers to receive live TV broadcast on a 3.5inch display panel within the coverage area. Pay TV business in Kenya is becoming more competitive, especially after the country officially initiated infrastructure developments aimed at migrating from analog signals to digital broadcasting. The battle to control Kenya’s pay TV segment has forced Dstv Kenya to introduce affordable packages that will see its grip in the sector stay put, the pay TV service provider has enjoyed monopoly for a considerable duration resulting in its enormous growth over the past few years.

Dstv Subscribers in Kenya using the Walka gadget will be able to watch free to air channels such as K24, KTN, NTV and KISS TV plus additional entertainment channels currently on its pay per view list. Monthly subscriptions for the Dstv Walka product are slated to start at Kshs.385 for 11 channels and Kshs.990 for 15 channels; however, viewers are required to purchase the Walka kit at Kshs.9,999. This development comes a few months after the service provider unveiled yet 2 new products, Dstv Drifta Dongleand GOtv on mobile DVB-H and Digital Terrestrial Transmission (DTT) platforms respectively. ‘Walka’ gadget has the capability of 3.5inch display of DVB-H mobile TV broadcast. Zuku TV which is currently considered as Dstv’s main threat in Kenya has lowered its prices with theAfrican Basic Package attracting Kshs.990 monthly subscriptions. Dstv’s move to acquire exclusive sporting rights in local tournaments is to blame for the unfriendly business environment witnessed by its competitors.
Separating Dstv Walka from its previously unveiled devices, Multichoice Kenya General Manager Steve Isaboke said, other devices were launched through partnerships; on the other hand, Dstv Walka is purely Multichoice’s product. Apart from the intended marketing strategy addressing pricing and accessibility issues, Dstv Walka was introduced with its main objective being to allow subscribers get more enjoyment and control of their television viewing. The entry of Smart TV, My TV and Star TV alongside mobile service provider’s intended debut in Kenya’s pay TV market segment is expected to fuel Dstv’s woes and perhaps cost its grip in the lucrative business. Zuku TV is expected to follow suit, by unveiling mobile TV based products after the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) approves and issues it with the license they’ve already applied for. Immediately after Dstv Walka was unveiled in the country, the firm made it possible for subscribers to activate their devices online via its website and Multichoice call center.
