Huawei Kenya, in partnership with 38 other Chinese firms, has undertaken a commendable initiative to provide employment opportunities across various sectors. The collaborative effort was unveiled during the YouthConnekt Africa Summit 2023 in Nairobi, where President William Ruto graced Huawei’s Job Fair.
Job Creation and Digital Transformation
Gavin Gao, the CEO of Huawei Kenya, emphasized the company’s dedication to supporting the Kenyan government’s digital transformation programs. Addressing President Ruto, Gao highlighted their commitment to job creation, with more than 500 positions made available to young Kenyans. The initiative spans diverse sectors, including ICT, manufacturing, trade, and construction.
Partnership with Kenya-China Economic and Trade Association (KCETA)
The collaboration extended beyond Huawei, with the involvement of the Kenya-China Economic and Trade Association (KCETA). Gao acknowledged the joint efforts in organizing the Job Fair, commending the participation of various members, such as Sunda International and the China Road and Bridge Construction Company.
Skills Development and Training Programs
Huawei Kenya has proactively expanded its business focus, aiming to integrate young Kenyans into both the company and its partner ecosystem. Gao highlighted the ICT talent ecosystem program, designed to enhance the digital technology and ICT competence of the youth. The program includes training 250 lecturers in advanced technology and annually upskilling over 10,000 university and college students.
Success Stories and Graduate Management Training
During the summit, success stories emerged, showcasing individuals who have benefited from Huawei’s initiatives. Figures like Michael Kamau, Huawei ICT Academy Manager, Eric Ongeri, Operations Channel Manager, and Mathew Kiptoo, the Hiring Manager, were introduced as testament to the impact of the programs.
In addition to job placements, Huawei runs a 6-month Graduate Management Training Program, providing youth with comprehensive training and internships. Successful completion of the program opens doors to job placements within Huawei or its partner ecosystem.
YouthConnekt Africa Summit 2023
The YouthConnekt Africa Summit 2023, themed “Youth Innovating a Borderless African Renaissance,” marked a historic event in Kenya, bringing together over 20,000 young people, government officials, corporate leaders, and development champions. The summit aimed to spotlight youth leadership and innovation for Africa’s integration through policy discussions, storytelling, networking, and entrepreneur-focused programs.
Partnership with KCETA
Huawei’s collaboration with the Kenya China Economic and Trade Association (KCETA) played a pivotal role in organizing the job fair. KCETA, a social organization comprising Chinese businesses in Kenya, has grown significantly since its inception in 2001. With a current membership of 102, KCETA’s mission is to strengthen the cohesiveness and influence of Chinese business people in Kenya.
