Safaricom and Huawei Launch Three 5G Experience Centers in Nairobi

Safaricom, one of Kenya’s leading telecommunications providers, has partnered with Huawei, a global ICT infrastructure and smart device provider, to launch three 5G experience centers in Nairobi. The aim of the centers, located in Village Market, The Hub, and Buruburu Shops, is to allow customers to experience the super-fast speeds and cutting-edge devices that come with 5G connectivity.

According to Peter Ndegwa, the CEO of Safaricom, the 5G experience centers are designed to offer Kenyans a chance to experience firsthand the potential that 5G has to offer. He explained that Safaricom, as a provider of digital lifestyle solutions, is committed to enhancing the country’s best internet network and enabling customers to discover the many opportunities that 5G brings.

At the experience centers, patrons will have access to a diverse set of advantages such as immersive virtual reality gaming areas, showcases of intelligent gadgets for both residential and business applications, and rapid speed-testing stations. Individuals visiting the centers will have the opportunity to comprehend the game-changing possibilities that 5G connectivity provides, particularly in terms of creating economic and social development by connecting small businesses and households.

Deputy CEO of Huawei Kenya, Sheng Kaifu, expressed his delight in collaborating with Safaricom on the experience centers. He stated that the centers show how 5G can unlock the digital economy’s potential. Huawei and Safaricom have been long-term partners, working together on various initiatives to improve connectivity in Kenya.

In October 2022, Safaricom made history by launching its 5G network, becoming the first company in the region to do so. Since then, Safaricom has continued to expand its 5G network by erecting over 200 5G sites in 11 counties, including but not limited to Kisumu, Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisii, Kakamega, Nakuru, Kiambu, Machakos, Kajiado, Vihiga, and Siaya. In regions with 5G coverage, customers can use 5G Wi-Fi to access the network. Additionally, customers with 5G-enabled smartphones can experience lightning-fast speeds of up to 2Gbps, with average speeds ranging from 400Mbps to 700Mbps.

Throughout its existence, Safaricom has shown dedication to enhancing its network infrastructure, with its combined 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G networks spanning more than 99% of Kenya’s populace. Furthermore, the company’s fiber network has passed over 450,000 homes and businesses, effectively improving internet connectivity and communication across the country.

The launch of the 5G experience centers is a significant step towards promoting the benefits of 5G connectivity in Kenya. With its transformative potential, 5G can drive economic growth and social development, creating new opportunities and possibilities for individuals and businesses alike. Safaricom and Huawei’s partnership on this initiative underscores their commitment to providing innovative solutions that improve the lives of Kenyans.
