Safaricom Shakes Up Top Management Team with Key Appointments

Safaricom, Kenya’s largest mobile network operator, has made several changes to its top management team. The new appointments, announced by CEO Peter Ndegwa, aim to provide the company with a strategic and agile leadership structure.

One of the most significant changes is the appointment of Esther Masese as the new Chief Financial Services Officer. Masese, who previously worked as the KCB Corporate Banking Director, will lead and oversee Safaricom’s financial services business. With a 10-year stint at Stanbic Bank and previous experience at Stanchart and Commercial Bank of Africa, Masese brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to her new role. She holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of East Africa, Baraton, and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Liverpool.

Boniface Mungania, who had been acting as the Chief Financial Services Officer, has been appointed as the Director of Public Sector Digital Transformation, effective April 1. In this new role, Mungania will develop partnerships with the public sector and drive digital transformation for the National and County governments. He will work closely with critical functional owners, including Enterprise, Financial Services, Technology, and Business Development, to deliver innovative solutions in a fast-paced environment.

The new Director of Brand and Marketing, Zizwe Awuor Vundla, is tasked with providing strategic market and product leadership for the Safaricom brand. Vundla, who previously worked at Diageo South Africa and Proctor and Gamble, brings over 15 years of experience in the field of marketing. She holds a Bachelor of Business Degree from the University of Cape Town and will report directly to the CEO.

These changes come just a week after the appointment of Adil Khawaja as the new board chairman of Safaricom following the exit of John Ngumi. The new leadership structure brings a fresh perspective and direction to the company as it continues to expand its services and operations.

Safaricom’s recent management changes are an exciting development for the company as it seeks to maintain its position as the leading mobile network operator in Kenya. With a strong leadership team in place, the company is well-positioned to continue delivering innovative and high-quality services to its customers.
